Do you think minimum wage would help your economy and its people?

  1. Yes, this would seriously help.

    43.8%
  2. This may help, but may not.

    12.5%
  3. No, increasing it will damage the economy and the people.

    37.5%
  4. I'm not really sure about it.

    6.3%

Hmm, I was finding that being the monthly payment on average for Americans. Not for that amount. Anyway, it's not Americas problem to pay for your college.

I didn't say it was Americas problem to pay for my college? I just said that college cost x amount and I would be paying it out of my minimum wage job.

I understand you didn't. However my argument on $10 an hour is you can survive. College is not needed to survive. Although it would be nice for as many people to go to college as possible, it's just not acceptable. Make sense?

I wrote a breakdown above. You'd been asking for it for a while, and I pretty clearly proved that you can't raise a family of 4 off 2 minimum-wage jobs at $10 per hour.

And my math was apparently too optimistic as well, as @Deljikho pointed out.

@metr0n0me so I did indeed read both breakdowns, thank you for that. So, I noticed everything was good until you got to the bottom. You both took the amount for college out before the groceries. If you had done groceries 1st you would have been left with over $200 left at the end of the month. Therefore you can live off of $10 an hour if you live within your means.

Yeah but I'm then living paycheck-to-paycheck to my entire life. I want to improve myself and, y'know, maybe actually get a career, right?

And what about the family one? I didn't include college in the family breakdown yet I still barely make ends meet every month, assuming everything goes perfectly well.

Also read Deljikho's post; I screwed up the math a little bit. Even if I didn't go to college I would still be $10 under per month.

And regarding the family one, I used the same math so the income is higher than what it should be, meaning I wouldn't have enough money every month (in fact, I'd be $1600 short every month).

As I keep saying. Americas problem is not "you going to college" it's you get the education you need from elementary school until your graduate. It's to get you through life. With the family one, I would hope your spouse was working. You can't support a family of 4 on $10 a month but you certainly can with 2 incomes.

yes she was also working $10 per hour
    --- Double Post Merged, May 4, 2017, Original Post Date: May 4, 2017 ---
Also: when did I ever say it was America's problem? I paid for it myself in the math...

Besides, do you know how damn hard it is to get a career without a degree? Like, actually.

HS degree: unemployment rate 5.2%, weekly earnings $692 (slightly above minimum wage)
Associates degree (finished community college): unemployment rate 3.6%, weekly earnings $819 (42,588 per year)
Bachelors degree: unemployment rate 2.7%, weekly earnings $1156 (60,112 per year)
Masters degree: unemployment rate 2.4%, weekly earnings $1380 (71,760 per year)

So basically, if you only finish your high school degree which you claim "is to get you through life," on average you will be unemployed, or earning minimum wage for the rest of your life.

ALSO: The weekly earnings don't include unemployed people. So basically this is saying IF you get a job, you'll be earning $692 a week.

$692 a week is a comfortable living wage.
I never said you did say it was Americas problem, I just want you to understand it clearly.
A 5% unemployment rate for a HSD isn't "that" bad.
Also, why would y'all both be making minimum wage at the same damn time?
Why would you have kids if you both don't have good jobs?
    I mean, come on.

What do you mean? Are you saying that if I make minimum wage my wife is supposed to make more than minimum wage, just because? Why wouldn't we be making minimum wage at the same damn time??

What if I got laid off from my good job or something? Or like, I choose to have kids?
    --- Double Post Merged, May 4, 2017, Original Post Date: May 4, 2017 ---
Have you lived off $692 a week? Have you budgeted for $692 a week? Thought so. I somewhat disagree with Deinen's point that you need to work to see where money goes--if you put some thought into it and even write a realistic budget, you can see that money goes faster than you might think it does. I'll admit that I'll probably fail at this too, but let's make you work for $692 a week and see how you live. After oh, a few weeks or so, you'll have an entirely different view.

Also, this is one of these "easier-said-than-done" things. I honestly really can't speak to how it feels to be poor (at least from my own experiences); my family's very well off and I haven't experienced poverty firsthand. However having dealt with a lot of people struggling with this sort of thing through volunteer work, school, etc., I can definitely say that it's REALLY easy to say "stop being poor, get a better job, why don't you ____" but it's REALLY hard to actually do those things.

Kid, please stop with such curt and dumb responses. Deinen is not always right; even he will tell you this. You can develop your knowledge-based arguments more and learn to be more objectively correct from just grabbing facts, but winning in subjective arguments takes experience and effort over time. You, on the other hand, don't seem to know how to do research, and you state your opinions without any reason to back them up. Yeah, somehow, as an 18 year-old, you don't know how to do either. It should be blatantly obvious, but immature and dumb remarks like this only make you look immature.

To add onto this: we don't mind if you disagree with us. We (edit: me, Deinen, Grandblue, Daniel Thompson, Deljikho, etc.) only mind when you disagree with us, sprout your preconceived notions with no basis in reality, and then plug your ears when we try to reason with you.

Like many voters, you're so blinded by your hatred of the opposing party that you refuse to acknowlege that *gasp* maybe a liberal might actually be right. And to be fair, I've had the opposite scenario happen, where I was once talking politics, and the other guy said: "You're a Republican, so I can't acknowlege you're right. But I will say that you're not wrong."

That was the moment I realized that something is really, really, wrong with political culture nowadays. And you (and people who have this same attitude) need to realize this and open your ears for once.

Or my contraception didn't work, or whatever.

While we're at it why don't we just sterilize poor people and welfare abusers.

@metr0n0me what are the chances of you and your wife both getting laid off a "good job" and being forced to work minimum wage?

If you can't afford kids, don't have them.

My aunt makes $600 a week. She lives in a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home, has a fairly nice car and sends her 2 children (twins) to a private a school and just gave her 23 year old son $1,500 to put down on a new car. She doesn't live an amazing life but she gets the job done. So yes, I know people who budget with 3 kids (2 that live with her, in 3rd grade) and lives a decent lifestyle. With no government assistance. No child support.

@Grandblue I. Don't. Care. About. People. Over. The. Internet. I. Don't. Care. If. You. Think. I'm. Immature. I. Don't. Care. About. You. Or. Anyone. Else. Here. I. Am. Simply. Voicing. My. Opinion. Thank. You.

@Deljikho abortion should be illegal and I'll stand by that until I die.

Higher than you think; look at what happened in 2008.

Yeah I agree I think we should sterilize poor people (especially in other countries like Africa) I think it will make the world a better place.

All they're good for is eating the worlds food and complaining they're starving, good riddance.

Edit: the last part was sarcasm before I get crucified

Ill take my post down since it "hurts" you. Don't bring 2008 up without a rebuttal though. Kinda funny how you get so upset over my opinions.

    Okay well, thousands of people

    1) Didn't have enough savings
    2) Weren't in fields that were hiring
    3) Had some other reason they couldn't get jobs

The number of homeless people, especially families, spiked during the recession. DO YOU THINK THAT THEY BECAME HOMELESS JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE LAZY??? DO YOU NOT THINK THAT THEY WOULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING THEY COULD HAVE TO AVOID BECOMING HOMELESS??? DO YOU THINK THEY JUST WENT AND LIVED ON THE STREETS BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO LAZY TO BOTHER APPLYING FOR A JOB???

    ARE YOU DUMB?
    --- Double Post Merged, May 4, 2017, Original Post Date: May 4, 2017 ---
YOUR FAMILY GOT LUCKY AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH. IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE THOSE 6 HOUSES AND THE HUNTING GROUNDS, AND DIDN'T HAVE AS MUCH SAVINGS AS YOU DID, HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD HAVE DONE?? NOT VERY WELL, HMM?!?!?

"OH, I MADE IT SO EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD MAKE IT TOO"

HAVE SOME EMPATHY FOR ONCE FFS
