Confused, I blinked and took another look around. Sure enough, I was in a market with tables for various religions, marked by symbols on ornate banners next to their tables. Behind those were dozens of gods tending to the rest of the people in the market, who were standing in front of desks or sitting on chairs.

I myself was right in front of my desk, which unfortunately left me with no time to think.

"You look fairly human for a god", I remarked, since I was unsure what I should be saying at all.

The man on the other side of the desk smiled at me.

"Well, that's how you imagined me, wasn't it?"

He waved his hand at the rest of the market.

"After all, this is your imagination."

    I looked at him, confused.

"My imagination?", I repeated, "So am I imagining you as well, or are you actually there?"

"Well, how do you intend to define real or not real?", the man asked me. He came around the desk and beckoned me to take a walk with him.

"After all, this place seems real to you. Am I just a part of your brain that thinks differently or am I an impulse from the outside? That is for you to decide."

I looked at the ground, trying to find some way to prove either one or the other, but gave up fairly quickly. Instead, I decided to mention what had been bothering me the whole time:

"If this is all my imagination, then why am I here? After all, if you really are god then you must realise I do not really believe in you."

The man guided me over past a peculiar man wearing large spectacles, who seemed to be frantically looking for something, and we left the market. In front of us was a path through an open landscape next to a small stream that seemed to take a bend past a small hill ahead of us.

"The things you fear always come back to you in the end", he explained cryptically.

I stared at him, not expecting a reply that seemed to have nothing to do with my question. After all, I had just admitted that I did not truly follow the religion whose god happened to be the man I was talking to.

However, before I could think of a reply, we had arrived at a high iron fence that had several gates, each one looking identical apart from a symbol embedded on a crest above it. Behind the gates there wasn't anything in sight - it just looked like there was so much light you could not see behind it. Despite this, I could easily make out the gates and the symbols themselves.

I was pulled out of my thoughts by the man, who had stopped behind me.

"Choose carefully", he advised me, "Remember what I've told you."

Then, he and the world I was in started to melt away, the contours disappearing and colours mixing into each other. Desperate to get away, I chose the first gate that caught my eye and dashed towards it. As I came closer, my feet started to sink into the ground as it became indistinct and started to fade.

Naturally, I yanked the gate open and leaped through it as soon as it was in reach, only to find myself falling through darkness. I shrieked in shock and frantically reached out for something to hold on to, but the only thing I touched was the cool air rushing past me.

Only as I heard my screams echoing back to me did I remember the words of the man:

"The things you fear always come back to you in the end."

He had been the god of the Catholics, and the symbol above the gate I had went through had been a cross.
