    Many people I know who attended American high schools believe that marijuana is of significantly less consequence when compared to alcohol. Their argument is that drinking (specifically binge drinking) can cause liver damage and permanent damage to the brain. Additionally, many alcoholic beverages contain a lot of carbohydrates which can contribute to increased fat (beer bellies). I heard somewhere that one beer is equivalent to eating 7 slices of bread.

    However in many european countries, people are being educated differently - for example I have a Dutch friend who believes strongly that marijuana has greater consequences than alcohol. I have another friend from London who believes the same. You would think that because it is legal in Amsterdam it's used by everyone, but this is not the case.

    If you smoke, it can inhibit your ability to gain muscle mass because smoking in fact makes you skinnier. For someone like myself who is trying gain some muscle, its not convenient. I know many people who become a little stupid after smoking (the day after), but it is unknown whether these effects are cumulative or permanent.

    One thing we can all agree on is that consuming substances will inhibit your intellectual ability - whether or not the effects are permanent are debatable. Studies have proven that binge drinking will shorten your lifespan, but proponents for substances believe that at some point or another, we will all die anyways.

    Long term, alcohol. One time, marijuana.

    Also, marijuana has no addictiveness.

    According to Mark Twain:
    “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.”

    Alcohol is far worse in my opinion for a few reasons.

    1) The potential to develop an addiction, a potentially life crippling one.

    2) Driving while intoxicated on alcohol, compared to under the influence of marijuana, leads to significantly more deaths.

    3) Associated costs of our heath care industry to care for those who have done permanent damage to themselves, and organs, from the use of alcohol.

    Not necessarily to counter your point, but to add context; this depends on the situation. My mother who suffers from celiac sprue often does not feel hunger, and without constant attention; doesn't eat. She has trouble maintaining 100 lbs consistently, marijuana has been critical in her ability to feel hunger, eat, and gain weight.

    Obviously this is not the norm.

    You can get addicted to anything. It doesn't have to be a drug or alcohol. It's the type of addiction.

    It's not necessarily that your body doesn't want to let it in. It gets used to it, and soon you need more and more to be able to feel the rush. It's like if you have to take any sort of prescription medication or OTC meds for being sick or headaches. Soon, you need more than normal because your body is just too used to it.

    I personally think marijuana is worse because it affects your breathing and the health of your lungs. Alcohol depends on the type and how much of it over a certain period of time. I have an alcoholic neighbor with 2 really little kids and it's just scary to think that he needs at least 4-8 beers a week and 2-3 servings of a harder alcohol a week to just make him be "okay." Not really sure though.

    The science seems to say alcohol, but marijuana isn't subject to enough study, because of the law.

    You can also obtain a "high" from eating a brownie so the method of delivery is important.

    Ummm, no.... that's not how it works at all.

    I agree with your statement but you can have marijuana in different forms that wouldn't require you to smoke it (edibles).

    People have lived to be 90+ years of age and smoked like a chimney, that's not to say it is bad but I assure you anyone that drinks more than 4 drinks a day don't live that long. Anyhow, you can simply have an edible and it spares you the lung damage.
    Although this is how MI's usually are caused they can actually happen without any of those conditions, a perfectly healthy 20 year old can have a freak episode of a heart attack. I'm not saying what he said is true but all those conditions would cause a typical heart attack but there are certainly odd cases of them.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ End of quotations
    I have smoked and drank in my lifetime and I can say 100% smoking isn't as bad in terms of "impairment". Motor skills are not as impaired when compared to drinking. High people tend to be mellow while some people that are drunk may get violent. It's really up to the person but I honestly think marijuana is given an unfair name and people demonize it for no good reason. Anything in excess is bad but "weed" is definitely healthier than drinking. Alcohol is a toxin after all.
