When are people shamed for not celebrating pride month, black history month, or women's history month?

This is the dumbest discussion. It's just a month that a group of people who aren't hurting anybody have to celebrate and connect. If you don't like it, don't celebrate it. It doesn't affect you, or give you any disadvantages, so stop complaining.

That's a short-sighed viewpoint there. Sexuality makes absolutely no difference. I'm a human, you're a human. That is literally all the representation you need. You're no different than anyone else in this world.

@Fangdragon1998 -- According to TheDebathiest, pedophilia is a mental illness.

According to the DSM, the comprehensive guide on human psychology.

Furthermore, I would actually like to argue that pedophilia is not a mental illness.

Gay pride parades take pride in both belief and action. Paedophile pride parades would be taking pride in the lack of action on their paedophilia. Which negates the whole idea of a 'pride' parade in the first place.

As per above, neither is pedophilia.

You even cited the DSM claiming that it is. It's just that our laws don't currently reflect that.

Let's break this down, as simply as I possibly can.

1a) The desire without any action to have sexual contact with children. (That's fine. As no-one here or in the DSM is proposing thought-crime.)

1b) The desire with action to have sexual contact with children. (That's not fine. For obvious reasons)

2a) The desire without any action to have sexual contact with people of the same gender. (Same thing, that's fine. No thought-crime here)

2b) The desire with action to have sexual contact with people of the same gender. (That's also fine. This is why paedophilia is classified as a mental-illness, and homosexuality isn't.)

The issue is not gay rights - it is that people are being hypocritical with this month.

Well, you believe so. You're arguing that we should celebrate paeodphilia in a way that we never celebrate cancer. We celebrate those that overcome physical illnesses, but we never celebrate the illness itself. I think you're trying to elude to a double-standard that doesn't exist. We shouldn't be enabling or 'taking pride' in mental-illnesses. We absolutely should be enabling and taking pride in homosexuality. Because it's not a mental-illness.

Pedophiles need social acceptance too. I can't imagine the self-loathing I would feel if I were sexually attracted to children, though I never had acted on it.

So do people with tumors. We celebrate the triumph over illness, rather than the illness itself. Whereas homosexuality isn't something to be 'overcome'.

Because of this, I question why gays accepting themselves is fine, but pedophiles accepting themselves is wrong - not acting on it, per se, but acknowledging that they are human and not a monster as well.

Because the desire and acts of homosexuality don't cause suffering. Paedophiles do. I don't know how else to explain it. 2 gays going 'at it' isn't an issue. Paedophiles having sex with kids, is.

    Come on Fang.

If I routinely fantasized and was aroused by the ideas of slaughtering my neighbours, this is not a mentality to be "accepted" just because I havn't acted on it yet. It's a dangerous belief, and I should get psychiatric help immediately. Because we apply preventative measures, to stop belief spilling over into action. The exact same principle applies to paedophilia. There is nothing comparable with homosexuality here, because gay-sex has no injured party.

One is a belief that leads people to act in ways that harm our society. The other doesn't.

Here's the way I see it. Any group of people deserve recognition for what they have overcome, but a whole month is kind of crazy. We don't need to make a whole month recognizing any group. Most of the U.S. is completely okay with many groups of people. I see no reason to have a hissy fit over letting a group of people who CLEARLY had struggles get recognition. I know I have had trouble dealing with this topic. People even this year continue to harass me for being "queer", but I am not going to demand a whole month of recognition. Perhaps a day, or week would work. In fact, I know a lot of people who also identify with the LGBT community and think pride month is stupid. Yes we deserve recognition, but do we need to demand a whole month and fight with people who disagree? No. I also know several people who will act like this. (*cough* Tumblr *cough*) These people bother me so much. They feel like everyone is STILL against them just because they won't "respect their pronouns". These people are widely accepted into the community and still get mad at people for simple things. Pride day, yes. Pride month seems a little ridiculous tbh. The reason there is no straight pride month is because these recognition "holidays" are made to show people that society recognizes their struggles and how they are welcome into the community. Also, how the hell did this turn into pedophelia? Please get back on topic ;)

You don't walk into a breast cancer research center and yell "There's other diseases too!". Because by your logic, you would totally do this.

There is nothing in the DNA or hormones that make people predetermined to be pedophiles. There is, however, a lot of research to back the claim that people are predetermined at birth to be gay. That said, the main difference between being gay and being a pedophile is that one is controllable and the other is not.

Also, one involves consenting adults and the other does not...

    I don't understand.
Let me link you to a dictionary.
    http://www.dictionary.com/browse/pedophile

Read the definition of a pedophile, and thank you for proving my point about them being ostracized.

Pedophilia is a state of existence, like being gay, bipolar, ADHD, liking BDSM, whatever. You are being extremely hypocritical if you find these people disgusting for a tendency that they cannot help.

I think you're taking the wrong angle.

There is nothing wrong with Pride months, however, that applies equally to majority groups. There should be a white pride month, a straight pride month, etc.

There is nothing wrong with taking pride in your heritage.

This is true about Japanese people in internment camps.

Although, Asians were treated badly. Chinese and Japanese immigrants alike were discriminated against in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Angel Island was like Ellis Island but for people from Asia. It was run under pretty horrible conditions and people were not treated like Ellis Island when people came from Europe. Because of restrictions on Chinese immigrants, some immigrants were on the island for years before they could enter the US.

Of course, the kind of discrimination that Asians had was no where near as bad as the discrimination that blacks were going through at the time. Bad, but not as bad.

Yep. All this month does is divide us. Why can't we all celebrate together? Although this month is supposedly celebrating equality, all it really does is highlight the differences between people. It is one big oxymoron. Now let me say that this statement isn't just targeted to Gay Pride month, but all the months that are now apparently dedicated to a single group's history. If everyone wants equality so bad, why divide us?

    Sure. I don't give a crap.

Like I listed before. Stonewall riots. Major LGBT rulings in the Supreme Court. Some major attacks on LGBT community happened in June. A lot of things in LGBT history just so happen to happen in June.

With whoever wants to celebrate whatever they want in the month of June. It's not like gays want the month all to themselves. It's just a time of the year that was settled on.

    LGBT history, basically.

It's not so much pride in being gay. It's pride in being open about it and not worrying about what others think. It may not be as big of a deal today, but a few decades ago it meant serious consequences. Basically, celebrating "pride" became a tradition. Of course, many traditions continued even though they aren't necessary anymore. I don't see what's wrong with continuing tradition in celebrating such a thing. What really is the problem?

What exactly is there to understand? He made completely valid points there, I don't see why you can't refute them if he doesn't understand. I am sure he would like to be enlightened.

That isn't oppression, that is how life has been naturally since pre-history.

This is not equality. Equality is everyone is exactly the same, and worth exactly the same. No behavior should be afford to one group over any other group, period. There are no circumstances, or justifications that make it anything but inequality.

That is a rather dim view of yourselves if you need to remind yourself you deserve to exist. Perhaps that is part of the problem as well? Wouldn't reminding yourselves that the world is indeed, full of ignorant closed minded people be a much more productive route?

the easiest way to refer to the community is "queer community"

some people see it as a slur, but historically it's not really, but there's no need for me to get into queer history here

also you're thinking of intersex, not unisex. feel free to do your own research but tread carefully young children.

also, nhjed, for someone to have to ask that question is quite evident of the fact we do face discrimination frequently

That may be how it really is though. Those people may have experiences in the past that have conditioned them to act how they do. The individual that called your mom's work may have been refused service/kicked out of a resort in the past for his/her sexuality, so now they call in advance to ensure it doesn't happen again. We can't know the discrimation that a group of people or individual persons face on a daily basis.

Go ahead and celebrate. I have no objections.

There is an unofficial "Heterosexual Awareness Month", but the problem I have with it is that the people who are celebrating it all post pretty homophobic content and just try to make it seem like gays are bad. I would have no issue with it if the people celebrating it would respect LGBT people just as they do themselves.
