An Overview of World War II

The Second World War, an international war fought by two major sides - the Allies and the Axis - made way for countless drastic changes for humanity in the mid-20th century. More commonly known as "World War II," (WWII) this worldwide conflict is known to be the most lethal war in human history, accounting for approximately sixty million casualties, including military and civilian deaths.

    Origin of the War

There is no official date in which World War II has started, and it is debated among many individuals about whether it had started as a continuation of World War I (1918), with the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937), or many other dates. However, the date most agreed upon is September 1, 1939, when France and Italy declared war on Germany after the Nazi Party had taken over Poland. World War II originated from a combination of many events that were occurring around the world; including national expansion, economic instabilities, and the rise of fascism, a form of authoritarianism.

As a result of various historical events such the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression following World War I, and fascism, the government and economy of Germany began to fall into shambles. However, after being announced "Führer" of Germany in 1934 and offering to bring the people out of oppression and to restore prosperity to their country, Adolf Hitler defied the Treaty of Versailles and formed the Nazi party to begin invading other European countries. Japan, too, sought land to independently acquire more resources, and attacked parts of China including cities such as Shanghai (despite Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek’s futile defences in the Second Sino-Japanese War) in 1937. Germany and Japan, both allies within the Axis, had begun to attempt to dominate continental Europe and Asia/the Pacific, respectively. This had caused retaliation from the future Allied countries, thus beginning the war.

    During the War

A large group of countries - after declaring war on Germany as a result of the constant invasions - formed an alliance named the “Allies.” Some of the major Allied countries include the United Kingdom, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union (which had been allied with the Axis prior to Operation Barbarossa in 1941), and the United States (which had been reluctant to join the war until the attack on Pearl Harbor in late 1941). On the other hand, after Germany had signed the German-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Demarcation, otherwise known as the Hitler-Stalin Pact, German forces continued to invade and attack various countries in Europe, such as Poland, France, Denmark and Norway (During the course of Operation Weserübung, which was responsible for the Norwegian Campaign and Debate of 1940), the Netherlands and Belgium (as according to the Manstein Plan), and a substantial amount of other states. This allowed the Germans to benefit from events including the results of the Winter War (the Moscow Peace Treaty), the Soviet Occupation of Baltic States, Bessarabia, and northern Bukovina, preparation for Operation Barbarossa, and other periods of time. By 1940, Germany had signed the Tripartite Pact along with Italy and Japan to create the Axis, a temporary military alliance, and to set warring boundaries. About a year later, a few months after the Soviet Union signed a Soviet-Japanese non-aggression pact in April, 1941, the Nazis prepared to attack the Soviets in the infamous Operation Barbarossa. The Germans attacked with the belief that the removal of the Soviet Union from the war would benefit their position; however, the attack failed, and the USSR joined the Allies against the Axis forces. Later that year, the Soviets had gotten revenge in events including the Battle of Moscow and, in 1942, the Second Battle of Kharkov.

On the other side of the world, Japan was in a tricky conundrum, for President Roosevelt of the United States had halted exports of steel and oil to Japan. Japan had little resources, and could not fight long if they did not have these materials. They resorted to bombing Pearl Harbor, United States' naval base, because they hoped to lift the embargo on the raw materials and also feared that the US would assist China. On December 7, 1941, Japanese soldiers dove into Pearl Harbor, killing around 2500 people, including the soldiers themselves. This surprise attack had destroyed 4 battleships and 188 aircraft on the U.S.' side. Thus, a day after the bombing, the United States officially entered the war. The US launched an attack on Japanese islands on April 18, 1942. Japan wanted to push back, and so the Battle of the Midway arose. They fought on the island that was halfway between North America and Asia called the Midway. In the end, the US Navy were victorious over the Japanese. This critical battle had turned the tables on Japan, for the Midway was considered an important military base.

Back on the European side, the Axis had taken control of a majority of Europe. However, beginning in 1932, things had started to look for the worse for Germany; when Germany had attempted to invade the United Kingdom in the Battle of Britain, the British had retaliated by bombing parts of Germany. Additionally, Allied troops had begun to attack the Mediterranean front of Germany as according to Operation Crusader, and the Soviet Union had been successful in pushing German territory back west from eastern Europe in battles (such as the Battle of Stalingrad and the Third Battle of Kharkov). Allied forces continued to attack the Germans until, eventually, Germany surrendered by signing the German Instrument of Surrender on May 7, 1945.

On the other hand, the Japanese did not back down after the fall of their allies, and continued to fight. At the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, American soldiers set foot on Iwo Jima, expecting to secure it in a week; instead, it lasted 36 days. The Japanese were prepared with tunnels, in which they were able to surprise enemy soldiers, but, eventually, the United States captured the island. Yet Japan, although defeated, did not surrender. During the war, an extremely deadly bomb was produced by the US, called the atomic bomb. Many were concerned and were hesitant on using this dangerous weapon at all because of its highly destructive power, and it is still debated upon whether it was justified to use nuclear weapons against Japan due to its lethality. However, President Henry Truman (who had succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly before the surrender of Germany) had used an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan to force them to accept unconditional surrender. This bomb, dropped on August 6, was a uranium bomb that killed approximately over a hundred thousand people, either instantaneously or over time through illnesses caused by radiation or some other source. When Japan still refused to surrender, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Dropped three days after its predecessor, this bomb consisted of plutonium and killed over fifty thousand people, civilians and military personnel alike. Finally, the Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, officially ending the war.

    Effects of WWII

World War II changed the world dramatically. In addition to the staggering amount of casualties, many political and geographic restrictions were changed, forming most of the world's current boundaries. Some of the changes include Germany, which lost a major part of their eastern territory and was split into West and East Germany, but was later reunited in 1990. Poland was moved westward in the Yalta Conference and later in the Potsdam Conference. Korea became independent from Japan and split into North and South Korea. A conference was planned to reunite Korea, but Russia refused, which is the reason why North Korea practices communism to this day.

Many countries were greatly weakened by the war, especially in Europe. WWII had ended the era of European colonization and there were war costs to be paid. The United States came up with the Marshall Plan to help Europe recover, but the Soviet Union refused their help. Later, the Cold War began in 1947 between the western and eastern parts of the world. The Western Bloc, including most notably the United States, made an alliance together called the NATO, and the Eastern Bloc, including the Soviet Union, created the Warsaw Pact. After 45 years of conflict, the Soviet Union collapsed and was replaced by Russia.

On the other hand, the United Nations were formed after the war, and it promoted peace among the nations. Additionally, the war allowed to development of more complex technological advancements, such as nuclear power, which proved to be very useful (perhaps with the exception of atomic bombs) and was soon employed into everyday life and still powers homes today. It also made room for more changes in society. Throughout the world, more women had started working since men had to go to the military for the war. After the war was over, African-American soldiers returned home only to find that they are still treated unfairly. This sparked civil rights movements for women and racial equality in the United States.

World War II was clearly a crucial key point in time for the world, as it helped shape and form the world we live in today. Having the widest range of participants and one of the highest levels of severity in warfare of human history, this event will not be forgotten as the war that has derived the structure of our world.

Jesus christ, what's with all the sjws being able to twist EVERYTHING into an equality issue. And where does Alexander III come in here? Elaborate on how it changed the world? And why should it be the only thing people learn in history class (what were you thinking, honestly)? What is the point of this essay, and why is WW3 coming? Lastly, do you have any evidence for your comment on acceptance? We know everything about 4,000 BC from archaeology, as that is prehistory.

P.S. I don't appreciate your amazingly ignorant comment on WW2 being an "excuse" for anything. Do you know how many innocent people died in it? You don't have to be such a jerk about it because of your annoying sjw equality bs. Honor really was the last thing on many people's lives in that war. Shut up and educate yourself.

I have no further words for you, what I was doing was merely to educate lpfwhateverthehellyournameis on how you act, you know how you act and you bring every single piece of criticism on yourself, if this is how you acted before you ban for 30+ alternate acc. generating bans, then IMO you didn't deserve your unban, its not my place to decide who gets unbanned though, much much smarter people than me do that. You srsly need to work on your maturity, as someone who plays infected with you almost everyday. You hackusate against me I suck at pvp, my top ks in kit is 10, my strat is medic knock people off the edge, im about as far away from a hacker or a pvp-er as you can get, yet you hackusate whenever you die, you hackusate on moderators. If you want to continue to deny all of this, go for it, its no skin of my back if everyone hates you, but if you ever decide to be more mature, less salty, and less rude, send me a msg, I would be happy to be your friend

And I just read "Jesus Christ" and "shut up and educate" or something like that. I'm not ignorant. I'm just expressing from what my school taught me, and how much bs it is. This is why I teach myself because I thought the same thing when I was learning it. It's not accurate at all. ;-; rip 6 years of my life to bs
