that seems like a neat idea I was curious so I wrote a quick plugin to do some sampling in the wild. Here's 15000 records for you.

Not only included if an ore was found but how many were found. The plugin used /randoms coordinate system and tested the block under it and the block in every direction N S E W moving down a block till it hit 0 15000 times.

Best Posts in Thread: Digging Straight Down: A Meep Experiment

This idea was 100% stolen from @Iridium "SAW" Ore in his thread:
http://meepcraft.com/threads/chances-of-finding-something-by-chance.55073/
So, I think it would be fun for us to take some data to deduce the probability of finding ores when digging straight down. To take part in this experiment, all you have to do is dig straight down. Ignore all caverns and mineshafts you run into, just keep digging until you hit lava or bedrock. After you finish a dig make sure you record your data then /random to a new spot and start again. While digging record any ores that are directly beneath you, or directly around you (So digging into a cavern and seeing iron 10 blocks away doesn't count). Below is the survey I would like you all to use:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1voD9QUYklqw8rOqVNFGFQnCHKrmsR-tgKaMOJz1AKMU/viewform?usp=send_form
Once you finish a survey it should pop up a link to do it again, so fill it out as many times as you want. It would be awesome if we could get at least 100 data points to make this more accurate, but if that doesn't happen it's perfectly alright. If the thread blows up to some ridiculous number (I hope), I will try and post results for every 100 data points.Last edited: Jan 10, 2016 -

interesting data on mob spawners
@DBLOSEVN any way you could include mossy cobble stone to give us an idea of the probability of digging near a spawner? and run it again?Cherrykit, Pmx728, Muunkee and 1 other person like this.
