When a cop shoots someone it’s because they already have their gun out for protection. If you taze someone they can still pull a trigger if they’re quick enough.

 

You can be appreciative of the police while still being critical. That being said I am thankful for them but at the same time I believe the system allows for discrimination and racism and in some cases is racist and discriminatory. So not all cops but the system as a whole is flawed that allows for abuse.

 

I say cops are not racist.

While there may be highly mediated periods of time where some cops decides to be racist, it is not fair to call the whole organization racist. The same logic applies for the Islamic religion. Radical Islam is bad, the Islamic faith is not. Differences made by extremists do not describe an organization.

Cops (or a similar body of law enforcement) are crucial to society. When you look at what one of the main duty of your government is, I’m sure everybody agrees that the government should protect us. Whether this be from war, or a murderer, the government is expected to deal with it. And the people who are most often called upon to defend us are cops. Now, clearly we need somebody that is allowed to use force while others are not; but still there are limitations that keep cops from becoming overpowering and being able to create a society of their choosing. If the average person had the right to beat the crap out of anybody they wanted to, people would obviously get beat up. Meanwhile, having cops be the only people allowed to use force (this could be anything from pepper spray to a gun), we have an entity that should be able to defuse problems while all of our constituents agree to put faith in their right judgement. And occasionally this judgement fails.

As someone already mentioned, no one is perfect. When you are put in a situation where you have been told a person that is potentially armed and dangerous is in front of you and reaching for their pocket, what would you do? We are asking for the utmost control of a situation where it is unpredictable how anybody but the most calm person would react. Tell me. Do you honestly believe a reasonable percentage of police officers want to go out in the field and discharge their weapon on fellow humans? Cops are people too, and killing people isn’t on most people’s To-Do list.

I probably rambled through half of this. But my main point is that cops are human, and we are expecting protection, but then getting upset when some situations are handled incorrectly.

Appreciate the beautiful society we have in America. Despite any amount of mistakes by different groups of society, our government is doing everything to keep its citizens safe and happy while maintaining their rights to live how they want to. Just try imagining life with no police officers (no unit that is able to use force to resolve conflicts).

 

Generally, from what I have heard about, police end up shooting people preemptively because they make threatening movements. I doubt any cop has walked right up to someone and shot them point blank when they had their hands on the wheel and were cooperating. Usually it is because the person made a reach or a sudden movement after the police told them to not move. The police deal with violent people a lot in some areas, and they have no idea what you are doing if you make a sudden movement, and statistically, you are about to pull a weapon or try to run from them. It’s your job to comply and to act as unharmful as possible.
Also, regarding tasers: police use tasers very often. But you’ll probably never see the headline “police tases man during struggle” because it happens so often and it’s not shocking. But “police shoot and kill man during struggle” is more concerning and tends to be a headline. This makes the impression that police are constantly shooting people when the reality is, police do make an effort to use their tasers.

no you've got this part wrong, the cops who kill poc never get convicted. they can bring in armed white men completely unharmed and buy them mcdonalds on the way to the courthouse, but can't properly apprehend a 12 year old with a toy.

you don't need to ask "are cops racist", most aren't. its just that the racist cops are protected by the system. that's the issue. even when other cops call out their peers for crossing the line, they are met with disciplinary actions like being transferred, fired, etc for speaking out. it's a systemic issue that's often dumbed down to people saying "you just think all cops are racist!". if you read articles constantly how any form of being black in america can get you killed by a cop and how your killer wont be convicted, you'd be hesitant around cops too, much less want to call them to your neighborhood.

This is argument ad hominem. He is irrelevant to the veracity of his claims.

Using force is only self defense against someone who is a clear and present danger, almost every cop murder that gets media attention is some variant of pre-emptively killing someone because you think in the future they might become a clear and present danger. The police should at the very least be held to the same standard civilians are held too if not higher when it comes to the use of force, if in a given situation I as a citizen am allowed to kill someone then the police should be allowed to kill someone.

Interestingly enough a group of researchers found that the police profession is a sort of magnet for those with authoritarian personalities. Undoubtedly there are real life superheros who are police because of a sense of Civic and moral duty, I am not trying to paint pain a broad brush.
