Honestly, it's hard to believe that there's someone older than me that can't comprehend the concept of first- and third-world societies (@Blue_marlin98). Sure, if we lived in a third-world society, $10 and hour would be great. However, we don't. People who are poor are uninformed of news, can't contact people on the phone in case of emergencies, can't get insurance, all of which screws up their chances of getting a decent job. Let's not forget to mention that people who need to make minimum wage often don't have an adequate education.

As Deinen said, people who work to make barely enough money to survive aren't thinking about their futures. That is a basic concept. Accept it. Don't say, "oh but they should be thinking about their future." They can't. Not when they are worried about their lives, their loved ones' lives, the government, etc.

Nobody wants to go out of their way to explain these basic concepts to you if you don't bother to learn on your own. The purpose of a debate isn't to be right and contradict, it's to learn and develop ideas. Being contrarian is just plain immature, cut it out.

If you're working a minimum wage job, you need to be making enough to take care of yourself. That's it.

Your equations are being based off of $15.00 per hour.

At $10.00 an hour you would make:
    $10.00 per hour x 80 hour pay period x 2 pay periods monthly = $1,600.00 per month

This is before taxes which generally is around 20% - 30% so we'll take the mean of 25% leaving you with 75% of your monthly pay.

    75% x $1,600.00 = $1,200.00 take home pay per month.

Now do the rest of your calculations based off the $1,200.00 not the $2,433.00

Just for fun the pay at current minimum wage is:

    $7.25 per hour x 80 hours per pay period x 2 pay periods = $1,160.00 monthly

    75% x $1,160.00 = $870 take home pay per month

I think Canada has a good idea. They're thinking of adding a life wage. Basically, if you're under 18, up you get minimum wage (7usd) but, if you're over 18, you get 12usd an hour.

Then the pizza store wasn't doing very well in the first place. I'm sure the 11 people can get a new 10$ minimum wage job at a burger king thats doing well or something.

@Grandblue yes, I'm totally the ONLY one who think the minimum wage shouldn't be $15 an hour. Yet, I'm the only one you call out. pleaseeeee lol, if you don't want to explain your reasonings, don't do it?

for the rest of you. If you gave a homeless man $1,200 a month after taxes, he would be able to make it work and live a comfortable life. Just couldn't have his cable, wifi, computers, smart phones and filet mignon & lobster tail for dinner.

This is really tired and old. The vast majority of people receiving government assistance don't actually do this.

I mean, I could have chosen other people, but you're the most vocal on this thread (and the dumbest imo.) And as I said, please learn the concept of a first-world society. Not having a smartphone and computer just wouldn't work out. Nobody said anything about a filet mignon and lobster tail, but ok. Everyone was talking about basic needs. That isn't needs for survival, it's needs to live a below-average lifestyle. Even homeless people can find a way to live.

One of my good friend's sisters works in a grocery store in a low-income part of town. I'll ask her tomorrow to count the amount of EBT users who:

    1) are holding anything newer than an iPhone 4s or a different phone of comparable value ($25).
    2) are buying one of the following: steak, lobster, liquor, or shrimp.

Is there anything else you want her to count?

Also, you kind of need a phone or a computer to live nowadays. You simply can't survive in society without one, or at least access to one.

--online job applications--many employers have moved applications online
    --arranging transportation
--getting called back for job interviews (like seriously, how can you get calls back without a phone?)
--contacting their manager at their job
    --banking

I know her pretty well; she's definitely super into cars but not really into fashion, how will she quantify this

Yeah fair enough; I definitely wasn't saying that a brand-new smartphone is the way to go, but you've gotta have some kind of phone and internet access to survive in this works.

Im more then happy too fund a local library where we will have internet access. Im not happy to pay for high speed internet and a new computer at their house. Transportation? Take a bike. Phone? shouldn't be touch screen!

Lord this is a blessing. The fact that you said, "shouldn't be a touch screen," in and of itself shows that you are completely uninformed on this topic. Smartphones aren't incredibly expensive (find the cheapest plan you can, it's unbelievable). Hell, they usually come with a browser. A smartphone is probably one of the most essential things after a home, bike, electricity and water.

You really, really need to do more research before posting in the debate section. If you're 18 and you or your family are rich enough to fund a local library, you need to have gotten the adequate education to at least do that.
