I mean, no offense. But if you've never held a real job in order to pay real rent and feed your real self and pay for real utilities then you actually have no idea what real life is like, thus you have no idea if the minimum wage is effective or not and you chose to spout your opinions.

Shouldn't Walmart pay their employees enough so they do not have to go on welfare? Why are we subsidizing labor costs for massive corporations?

I had a job in High School, my little brother is currently a Junior in HS and has a job. I know plenty of people that worked during HS. Are you just lazy?

@Deinen if we didn't have a minimum wage then the 16 year old high school kids would be getting say $15 an hour to work. The minimum wage is just the minimum someone can pay their employees. Walmart should pay more but in reality they shouldn't be forced too. They have a liveable wage. The problem is many young people can't live without jordan's, iPhones, etc look at most of the walmart employees. They have their nails done. Wearing nice shoes, jewelry, have smart phones. Then complain that they can't afford food (even tho they eat out) and can't afford power etc etc.

@Deljikho it has nothing to do with me being lazy. I want to focus and enjoy my last few months of highschool instead of leaving school and going straight to work. If I had to work I would but I'm thankfully in a position where my parents can afford to pay for my car etc, as soon as I'm done with highschool I'll have a job. We're going on vacation I'll be gone for 2 weeks, why get a job now when in a month imma have to get 2 weeks off?

I said Minimum Wage is fine as is, but never said the problem was people being "lazy". And the real thing I want to point out is that the cost of living differs on where you live, so it is difficult to set up a high federal minimum wage.

I don't want to get into this usual debate pattern here so I'm not going in far, but @Deljikho is pointing out that not having a job is most of the time not because you are lazy. And I also feel like @Blue_marlin98 doesn't know enough about being poor to discuss about this topic, as you believe that poverty is a choice, which really isn't true.

So you agree U.S taxpayers should subsidize Walmart (any other giant corporations) employees?

Because $10.00 is not a livable wage, and you would know this if you had spent a single day in the real world.

No, I think people standing at a register sliding object into a bag and accepting cash should not be making $15 an hour.

I know cost of living differs from place to place, someone living in Georgia doesn't need as much money as someone in California. However, $15 an hour to do that job is way too much. You need 0 experience, 0 schooling, 0 knowledge to do that. As long as you can put a smile on your face your hired pretty much. You can live off of $10 an hour the problem is can you live to the standards in which you want to?

I know people who make $12 an hour and live just fine. The only people I know making $9 an hour are people at school.

If you are poor its because you either are lazy or cant budget money.

Sure, not every single one. But if the living wage in an area is indeed $15, they should make that. There are a few examples of cities implementing a $15 minimum wage and from the information since, it's actually improved the economy because more people have disposable income to spend back into the economy.

You cannot live off $10 an hour, I know because I've seen it countless times now. I know / see people who are fiscally responsible and are strugging at $10 or $12 an hour. They take low-wage jobs because they are uneducated or unskilled. Now before you harp on trades, which are a good solution, but they cannot be the only one because a lot of contractors who hire tradesmen are not hiring people just starting out, instead opting to hire people with 1-2 years of experience. Trade schools help, but do not replace on the job experience in which most people are looking for - It tends to be a chicken or the egg type of issue. You can't get a job with no experience in trades, but you need to get a job to get experience.

I cant move out into a tiny apartment, one of the cheapest I can find, while living off 60 cent ramen every day, at my paycheck, this is not including any loans as Im not doing that
I make $12 an hour at a decent job
Tell me again how raising the minimum is silly

What I'm saying is that cities/states need to adjust their minimum wage accordingly to meet their needs. No need for an extreme federal minimum wage.

In some areas, people actually can live with $10 an hour while in most places, they can't.

I do agree that there is an issue with the current minimum wage but a federal minimum wage of $15 an hour isn't the solution.

This is the exact proof why you are not ready to participate in this discussion.

Someone working at Mc. Donalds making the same as someone in the army is sad. Paying someone a cheap wage to flip burgers is not sad. How about a raise? Start them out at $8 and give them a raise every year? maybe after 5-10 years of flipping burgers they'll make it to team leader or store manager!

Okay Marlin, time to answer more of your responses right now:

Yeah, getting a loan that increases in value every time its compounded, while having no job is just lovely, isn't it? They cost tens of thousands of dollars to go to learn, then not having the money to pay, so instead, have to get a loan that puts them off balance and loses it when trying to "Budget".

Are they living off of someone else's pay check as well, or is it just ONE person?

No, most can't even live off of the basic or even minimum standards of living at all.

Actually, companies are in fact after the basic knowledge and experience to work, which some can not even do.

Why, because you don't consider these people to have the right to a fair pay?
Did you actually LOOK at Fair Work Australia? If the job is at minimum wage and the person is under 21 years of age, they would actually be paid less than that, because their brains are not fully developed and at 21 is (Excluding those with a trade qualified). And those who are 16 get 60% of the minimum wage of an adult (Which is $9 to $15/hour, for Australia $10.62 to $17.70/hour).

Dude, do you think poor people are that lazy? Don't you mean tired, from all the work they have been doing? Also some can't budget BECAUSE THEY CAN'T AFFORD EVERYTHING!

Okay, sorry to be angry there, but like everyone else has said, if you never had a real job to pay for things, you can't really be seen seriously then, because you've never experienced what its like. And Marlin, do some research please? It would help you to stop being abused on the internet, if you check and see that what you are writing is true.
