After watching an episode of Adam Ruins Everything (Emily ruins Adam Ruins Everything, specifically)
I learned about the backfire effect, and it is pretty interesting.

I'll try my best to explain.

So, lets say you said "Art is as good as it was back then" and then you were told "art is failing drastically and it's gonna die." If you aren't/weren't a huge artist/art supporter and didn't know this, (lets just say this is true) you would go, "huh, I guess I was wrong"

Now let's say you were a huge supporter of some political party and someone says (assuming its true, theres evidence.) "<political party> are liars and are doing bad promises" Sometimes its likely that you would think you are MORE correct. Hence backfiring the other persons argument, which then leads to The Backfire Effect.

So, what are y'alls opinions on this?
(Please correct me if I got anything wrong here)

It's annoying how discovering something wrong about your original opinion strengthens your belief in the wrong opinion. It's probably the product of the brain's dislike of working extra hard along with how it edits memories to fix inconsistencies in beliefs. This idea can be helpful for avoiding fake information, but it also sometimes allows someone to stick to a false belief, even if it's harmful to them.

I would imagine the types of people who actively seek out debate aren't prone to this.

If you are a huge supporter of fine art and you are told its dying, well yeah you'd be offended. Even myself as a person eho does artsy things Im like LOLno.
Buuut looking at it from a standpoint of someone who doesnt care about artsy things, I mean yeah sure its not as cool or influential as it used to be

Its about your current standpoint and context, people hate being told they are wrong, if they strongly feel one way and you say the other way theyre gonna not like this but if they don't really care then they'll go oh yeah ok

    Its basic humanity really

State the facts and sources with your claims. If they still refuse to accept your new ideas or just say "you're wrong" without refuting your points, then they are just ignorant and unwilling to change.
