Yanny vs. Laurel

deep voice says laurel, high voice says yanny

 

at first I heard Yanny, then I watched it again and hear Laurel, and now I can only hear laurel.

Yes that's true. In the clip both Yanny and Laurel are being said. Yanny is said with a more higher frequency and Laurel is said with a lower frequency. Because younger people have better hearing and they are more able to hear higher frequency so that is why they hear Yanny. And older people or people with worse hearing, tend to hear Laurel.

 

Opened it up in FL, after reading Meeplord's study: I filtered out the high end of the sound and slowly brought it back in, fades from one word to the next. Fun stuff!

I hear just Yanny. But i think what she is doing is editing both of the lines together and combining them with separate tones and frecuinces. Some people ave different hearing things so they hear one or both frequincies.

I read all studies regarding this controversy, but I fail to understand where/when people are physically able to hear « Laurel » in what is clearly « Yanny » to me.

Yeah, it's entirely based on either the frequency range of your audio system... That or your ears are seriously messed up. I feel I should also note that the audio clip itself is relatively poor quality, thus limiting the available frequency bands to discern data from. Because my normal headphones are very bass heavy, I hear Laurel through them. However, if I listen through my sister's cheap Apple headphones, I hear Yanny.

For a visual explanation, here is something I whipped up:



As you can (hopefully) hear, in the lower frequencies, "Laurel" is clearly discernible, then when going into the higher frequencies, "Yanny" becomes more prominent. Laurel is however, the "actual" sound, seeing as the clip contains the signature "L" and "R" sounds representative in all frequencies of the clip.
