Silver or Gold Investments?

As the title states, I am wondering which metal I should buy for a long term investment. I already invest a couple thousand in the stock market and am going to invest the rest into a precious metal. I just checked the prices and the silver price is around $16 for an ounce and gold is around $1200 something per ounce. Obviously I could get a lot more silver but I don't know which one to get. The reason I am buying precious metals is because I read (I don't know if this is right and it was a while ago) that money inflates 3% each year. Gold and Silver would protect me from that but the prices could change at any moment. I am still *partially* recovering from the stock market "crash" after the election. Also, where could I get these metals? Could I get them at coin dealers and local jewelry places? I am not looking for anything special or a special brand of bars. I just want metals in general.

EDIT: Also, please give me a logical answer and please don't say I'm too "young" to invest. I have been investing for a few years (started in 3rd grade and I am going into 7th grade). I have chosen around 7 winning stocks and 3 losers at this time. I forgot to mention, can anyone tell me if renewable energy would be a good investment?

woah. not everyday you hear a 12 year old buying stocks and stuff, but I buy silver. i have been buying silver for almost a half year now.

I decided for now to buy 1 pound of silver and put the rest in gold.

 

Alright, all that's left is renewable energy or not. Seeing as renewable energy is improving over time, yes you might want to. You should know that it'll take a while before stocks of renewable energy are worth much.

 

Alright thanks for the info, obviously I might change my mind but I plan on joining the army at 17 and then get out at 25 (8 years) then possible make a small business. I am putting all my money into semi-short term investments like gold, silver, etc. I may wait a while to invest in solar.

 

Find a bluechip and stick with it, forget it, and remember one day you either lost or gained a lot of money.

(1k isn't much for investing in gold and silver, or even stock. Look into maybe a GIC, they can pay out fair amounts.)
