During the beginning of the meeting during which Fuzzlr expressed his concerns and hopes for the server, I remembered a suggestion made a while back. It was somewhere along the lines of /playerreq or something. Anyways, one of the main issues brought up was the fact that new players don’t feel like they’re entirely welcome; saying a mere Welcome to Meep! Doesn’t go as far as you think. Im suggesting that when a new player joins, it goes into the database; almost like Modreqs for staff but more simple: Orientation Requests or ORs. Now these OTs would be for everyone to claim, but specifically for players and not staff members.

Players would get a message on their screen (ex)

    Welcome, McPlaya2341 to Meepcraft!
a new orientation request is filed, do /warp orientation to help MCPlaya2341.

/warp orientation would be a simple area like the /warp bank where there are signs with names of new players needing to be oriented. Players who are aware of the rules can right click new players names to claim help(age?)

    The new player then gets a message;
WellknownFriend1515 (lmao idek) wants to assist you. Type
/accept to accept their request or /deny to deny it.

if accepted, WellknownFriend1515 would be teleported to MCPlaya2341. It is up to Wellknown to affiliate the new player, thus inviting him into the community.

It may seem hard/complicated but its really not. Just dedicating small amounts of time may lead to a steady increase of players. Not just cits who dont talk, but newer players invited into groups and encouraged to engage with people. If you dont feel like helping at this spectrum, Klutch pointed out that it just takes teleporting to a new player’s creative build or trying out their slots to help them into the community in a softer way.

If this seems far-fetched I'm sorry. I just thought it'd be worthwhile suggesting as we're trying to bring in new players :)

Although it sounds like a great idea on paper, I just don't see how it can be done. +/-

Numerous players already try to provide a welcoming presence, some by hanging out at /warp tutorial [ @kcschmidt ], or inviting them into their towns. I find that people with a very independent learning pattern, namely introverts, tend to shy away when being directly addressed (or perhaps that is just me). If I were a new player wanting to learn the basics of the server, I would prefer to learn on my own, rather than have an overly friendly guide hover over my metaphorical shoulder.

I also think it's a bit too trusting to let players 'orient' new players, even if you are basing it off of age. It's like a town, in a sense; you hire recruiters and town staff that you find worthy of the position, in hopes that they don't screw up and lead newcomers astray.

Now if you were to give an option to the new players, asking if they want a player-to-player orientation, that might be alright; but most new players don't pay attention to the chat.

The suggestion doesn't seem too far-fetched. If it gets accepted, I'll be sure to orient new players in my free time. Good luck!

Right, I totally agree with you, and this is partially why I held off on making this thread. Its hard to bring new people in and just willing them to stay doesn't do much. Imo I think Meep is just a bit complicated/overwhelming at first, regardless of tutorials. Eco servers are generally new to people and almost foreign.

There doesn't even need to be a plugin, just like an announcement of creating a friendly environment I think. Some sort of written thing that Fuzzlr addressed earlier today. Just talking to 20 some people doesn't really do much if you want server-wide attention.

Scenario - total prick claims the or and send a bad vibe to the new player, causing them to leave. What prevents this?

I'm not a fan of the whole /warp orientation thing.

What I do myself is I say G'day/welcome and if they reply I asked how they have been with all the good stuff. If they don't I usually just say if you need any help type /pm oklingo and I can help you out.

I have had a few new players come and stay because I took them under my wing for a bit like Joeradd recently. There is even another lad that Strengthen and I had to step him through setting for it to let him speak because he joined the town and never typed only nodded and shook his head. I will have torun by his plot but he is always in parkour.

But back to the suggestion I think it's all good saying g'day and all that good stuff. Also I am pretty sure there is being a rework with the tutorial book. Just don't want some people guiding that is not 100% on track with everything.

If I were a new person, It would seem forced and icky. Like people are trying to greet me for bragging rights or something. You can just /warp tutorial to greet the peoples.

EDIT: I need to sleep... sor if I dont make cents...

Not entirely sure what I think of this.
As @StarryKnights said, I'm usually camping in the Tutorial anyways, and here's what I see. Generally, new players immediately log off, and never see chat, even, run straight through or skip the tutorial (usually running to go hack in KitPvP), or they figure out chat, and stay. The thing I've noticed is they usually all end up at spawn, and run around trying to find what they're looking for. The ones that generally stay are the ones who interact in chat. Usually, what I do is wait for people to join, welcome them, and warp to Tutorial as fast as I can.
My concern with this is the automated feeling it would produce. Nobody would really like this if it felt forced or regular. The way to make people stay is to make them feel like they belong.

My ideas on increasing new player retention are: fixing Tutorial (most of the holograms are outdated), make spawn less confusing (the note shop in the middle blocks vision of portals on the other side), and making minigames having a constant stream of people. My reason for that final idea: most new players are here for minigames, and they're almost always empty, so why would they stay?

This is great, hopefully it comes out soon. This might take care of the majority of confusion. I just in all honesty want something to be done to help new players into the community a bit more.

This is part of a helper and mod's responsibility already. If we aren't doing it then it needs to be brought to our attention.
Of course our wonderful community has taken it upon themselves to do some of this work so we don't have to and can focus on other things.
I am -1 for those reasons however if this is accepted I'd be delighted to discuss this further :)

Sounds good on paper, but in reality, we don't have a large enough base. And though we have Peper, she can't help everyone who joins meep, and if she did, she'd deserve a [Orienter] rank.

I've seen the new version of the guide @Lady_Hestia is working on. Let me just say it fixes every issue, and improves the wording so much, it's hardly the same thing.
The way I see it, it is the responsibility of every single person on this server to help others find the acceptance on this server.

This doesn't fix the fact that players, specifically kids, are so ignorant that they won't read a sign(s) that tell them the rules or a guide on how to do something. You can make a guide more immersive but its not going to fix the facts.

I deal with a good deal of new players. From my calculations, about 70% leave within 5 minutes, 15% let me show them around, but never come back, 10% immidietly go to kit or somewhere to hack, and 5% come back the next day. Most of the 5% that stay are the ones who read the signs and such, and I often get lots of questions about the guide, because the current information is wrong.

Denied, we don't think this is needed. If you want to help, just do /warp tutorial when you see a new player join.
