    For or against?

    Discuss.

Personally, I'm all for it. It's a persons choice what they do with their body. they shouldn't be told that 'oh you have such and such disease, it's terminal, just live up until then.' if the person is suffering throughout that time I'm sure you wouldn't want to suffer, just leave the world in peace.

    Yup.

If I get to that point I hope whoever is with me will pull the plug.
If it's my own plug to pull I will. It'd be nice to do it painlessly though.

If they know they will die soon becouse of it and they will have alot of pain, then being able to leave the world in peace would help them.

    No

Doctors take an oath to "Do no harm"

Assisting in killing someone is harm.

It's not harming anybody? An adult has agreed to be killed.
What right do you have denying someone a service they want that has no effect on you?

In my opinion, regardless of whether they agreed or not, taking a human life is doing harm.

Doctors of all people, should not be in that business.

I’m having trouble understanding this argument because it seems to just be sentimentality. What negative impacts come from letting doctors assist in suicides that we might try to prevent?

If I'm too weak to kill myself I hope someone else will do it.

Right, the oath, but wouldn't letting them die painfully in a long time be more harm than killing them now?

I remember a story about a lady who'd lost complete mental function, the doctors were merely keeping her living (expensively). Her husband said she'd have wanted to die, her parents wouldn't let him do it. 12 YEARS later they finally pulled the plug.

Moral of the story, taking away our privilege to kill ourselves is taking away a basic human right. One of, if not the only thing, we have above animals is realizing our own existence. If we can't act on it, that makes us one step closer to them.

I'm not advocating we shouldn't have a system in place to let people off themselves. I'm saying it should not be manned by doctors. Worst case scenario, it should a specialized set of doctors who do not see general patients. There is no telling what kind of mental wear assisting people in their deaths can put on a human psyche.
