Cursory glance on the net got me this:

    CPU
    Mobo
    RAM
    GPU
    SSD

Leaves room for a new PSU, a cheap case, and a cooler. If he needs a laptop for some reason then he's screwed ig but it's not hard to build a good computer on the cheap.

They wanted a laptop, and didnt want to build it. I know computers arent hard to build, ive built 10+ lol, but one of the things mentioned in the OP was school. Some people dont like to carry towers to school. lol

No, it won't. It's a refurb from 5 or 6 years ago, and it's too low cost to include a GPU. It 100% has Intel integrated graphics from the 3rd gen i7 he said it has.

I mean, I don't agree with the way he said it, but he is right. Someone having a VERY tight budget on a laptop will most likely be more than happy with a decent HDD and won't care about an SSD at all (with it being like 1/3rd of the laptop price). Furthermore, I would not risk buying a new SSD for an old laptop; if the MOBO decides to melt down, I'd not be happy with it taking down my disk as well.

Of course they are not expensive if you link 250GB models. It's up to 100 dollars for 500GB and up to 200 dollars for a 1TB variant.
Since in the end he chose a 1TB HDD over the default 320GB, I'd assume he needs the extra space and a 250GB SSD would not do it.
It's also a laptop where there's space for only one disk, he can't just add an SSD like with a tower.

So yeah, it's kind of a lot of money for one part and it does not have "the biggest noticeable change in every aspect of the computer". So you boot faster and your applications will load more quickly and be a little bit more responsive. Considering he also wants to play stuff with the laptop, it won't increase his fps at all.

Sorry for being overly defensive here, but I've had a lot of people try REALLY hard to sell an SSD and even though I agree, it is damn convenient to have in new PC builds, I would not be trying to recommend them to people with an extremely tight budget on an laptop. Just nonsensical.

    Well, this will be fun.

    1. When I am assuming things, I mention it. You are assuming here he doesn't need the space, even though he decided to get a 1TB HDD disk instead of the original 320GB. Seems like a conscious decision with a plain purpose to me.

    2. I never said it would be a high FPS machine and you have also proven my point that swapping to an SSD would not improve his FPS only application loading speed and overall responsiveness. I know you want to show how smart you are with your very specific "pagefile on Windows (swap on *nix) an on-disk memory in a way", but maybe you should stop for a second and actually think when does Windows use that type of virtual memory. When the available RAM is not sufficient enough. Guess what, he got a Laptop with 16GB of RAM. I am sure he'll be fine with most of the games that laptop will be able to run.

    3. Yes, everything seems faster (yes, I do actually have a setup with a SSD/HDD used for system/data and a laptop with a hybrid SSHD for caching) and it is hella convenient, but definitely not a necessity and not a "massive" difference as you are trying to sell it. Again, I am repeating myself, but for a guy with a 300 dollars budget for a laptop there's no point (or means I would assume) in getting a SSD and replacing his existing 1TB HDD.

You are telling an amateur astrophotograph to get the newest, shiniest CCD on his telescope. Yeah, it would be freaking awesome and super convenient, but he doesn't need it :)

Fair enough. I was just advocating the fact that your suggestion and the following reasoning seemed rather unfitting to the situation OP is in. In the end it's up to them to decide, as you said. Not like the OP was interested in taking any suggestion anyways.
Also, excuse my remark about you trying to sound smart, but pulling out a nix swap instead of the conventional virtual memory (which I assume is what is meant here) seemed to me like it being the case.

Don't get me wrong, I know you are a factor of ... many smarter than me in IT related matters and meant well, but come on, I was just trying to be realistic here with the case at hand.

I wouldn't worry too much about clogging the thread, the topic has seemingly been closed. And thanks for conversation invitation, I'd have to pass since I don't want my digital butt kicked :) No hard feelings.

The laptop he got can only have one piece of storage hardware. That means he has to choose between the HDD and the SDD since he doesn't have the option of an external hard drive (the laptop is also for school). He's choosing to stay with the 1 Tb hard drive he got with the computer because he needs the memory capacity.
