But... religious or non-religious? It's entirely different (and there's no statistical way to tell who is a "better" speaker either way)

I'm not gonna confine it to either group, you can name you qualifiers or disqualifiers with your choice. There isn't an empirical way to determine "best" so the weight of your argument is entirely based off what you deem makes someone a good speaker.

He's actually the inspiration for me creating this thread. His ability to speak with confidence and projection and his surreal talent of reading crowds and then madlibbing inferences he made across his speeches is near textbook for being an influential speaker.

Pericles, Socrates, Cicero, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela and Mike Soper would be a good short list but it's relatively Western and specifically American centric. Personally, I would go with Abraham Lincoln but I can see arguments for most of them. I think Hitler is definitely overrated just because people see him going crazy in a language they don't speak over some dramatic dubbed music on youtube.

It takes a lot of influence in a speech to be able to win over an entire country to accept extremist points of view, though he had a lot working in his favor such as the existing unappealing Weimar government and economic collapse

I don't want to have a debate about this on a minecraft forum, and I have heard some of his speeches. Like you said he came at a very good time for an opportunist like himself. There had been considerable left and right wing factions in Europe for some time as well as an anti-semetic undercurrent which people don't like to talk about. He provided people to blame for Germany's failures and proposed ways to get out of the economic crisis but also got plain lucky with how he was able to rise to power. In addition, I also think if you are rating best orators the actual content should be brought into question which he obviously gets an F on.

Many influential speakers aren't exactly detail oriented, as definitely the case with Hitler. I don't really think it was all luck during his rise to power. There was a very crucial point between 33-34 where he was Chancellor but not yet dictator and his consolidation of power was one of a mastermind, selective uses of force and mostly coercion of the people around him and support of the people. I really honestly think Hitler was a master at public speaking and manipulation of peoples

I'm saying from an ideological/meaning standpoint he gets an F on his speeches. If you look at any of the other people I listed, what they said stands the test of time. Hitler's speeches certainly do not do that because of the content, which is arguably more important than the actual performance itself or the showmanship. He definitely did get lucky in rising to power, not saying it was entirely luck though. Obviously, he got lucky with the general political environment in Germany and Europe, but besides that, he got lucky with his sentencing for the Beer Hall Putsch, he got somewhat lucky with being put into position as the chancellor, and he got lucky big time with the Reichstag fire. Sometimes it takes luck in history though, and Hitler was one of history's great opportunists.
