Cheating in school. Chances are, we've all done it in the past. But I personally believe that what many consider "cheating" is not a bad thing, but a way to learn. I will not be talking about cheating on tests in this thread because that is something that I personally would never do or recommend.
Now before you assume that I don't care about my grades and that I constantly cheat, I don't. I have a 4.0 GPA and usually get nice test grades, because I use the homework of my peers and let them use my homework as a tool for learning. There is, in my opinion, a good and a bad way to cheat.

Bad cheating: Copying down someone's geometry answers onto your sheet without seeing what you did wrong and turning it in without any work shown. While I do not recommend doing this all the time, we've all had those panicky assignments where the teacher didn't explain anything and we end up having a 10-page homework assignment on it. If a situation like this happens, remember the 2 main rules of direct cheating:
-NEVER copy answers word-for-word, whether you get them off of the internet or from others.
-If it involves math, ALWAYS copy work down to show that you "know" how to do it.

If a time of direct cheating occurs, still try to find some time at home on youtube looking for tutorials and teaching yourself. Some teachers just aren't good at their jobs.

Good cheating: Looking at the work of multiple people, to see what answer most people got on the problem. seeing what you did wrong, and correcting yourself. Perhaps asking the person to briefly teach you, or copying down their answers and reworking the problem on your own time to see if you can get it right. Maybe asking a friend to send you a picture of their homework over text or skype to see how they worked it out. Googling exact tests and studying the information rather than remembering the letters of the answers also falls under good cheating.

Teachers are always threatening us like, "If you can google it, I can too!" or "If you cheat you will get bad test grades!" But honestly, if you cheat the right way, you will end up learning and understanding more than you did in the first place. And about the plagiarism thing, simply rearranging and rewording sentences or statements will wipe out the possibility of your teacher finding out you copied, along with maintaining your usual writing style. (Not saying you should direct copy, just saying it's silly how some teachers think we're dumb enough to copy a source directly.) So yeah, that's all.

wow i should write a pamphlet
anyway have fun with the poll

I mean, if you're going to spend so much time cheating that you actually learn the material, I don't see why you wouldn't just spend that same time learning the material in the traditional way.

I think that'd depend on the person
I learn way more when I watch other people do something than reading how to do it
If its stupid and it works then it aint stupid

I was more so referring to Googling stuff and studying it. Sure, it might be beneficial for some people to learn stuff directly from others; however, if someone is going to take the time to personally read the information, I don't see why they wouldn't just do it in the way that's allowed.

90% of the stuff you learned you aren't going to remember or need once you're done with school so it's kind of silly regardless

I'm finding that oftentimes, it helps to see worked-out examples. As I sit here, I'm doing my physics homework, and a lot of the problems are really difficult to understand unless you see it done. Once you see the equations applied, however, you can then use them for other problems and understand the material better. Of course, it's not beneficial to google the problems without making an effort first, but sometimes it's nearly impossible to apply the explanations in the textbook to the problems.

I'd say this falls under bad cheating--you're just using rote memorization to remember test answers as opposed to learning the material. "Good cheating" is just studying: there's nothing wrong with saying "Hey dude, how did you work out problem #8? I'm having some trouble understanding it and wanted to see how it's done." You're learning and understanding the material, which is the overall objective of the class, right?

That depends. If one plans to go into a career that requires a specific degree, they're going to need to remember a lot of what they learned while getting said degree. Furthermore, they're going to end up using a lot of this knowledge if they do go into the career that they're planning to.

Even if we strictly talk about low-level college and below that (or even if we only talk about high school and below that), I'm very skeptical of the claim that most people won't remember 90% of the stuff that they learned. I'd agree that most people will forget the majority of stuff that they learn; however, 90% seems a bit excessive.

Regardless, if you're going to assume that what people learn in school is mostly irrelevant because most people will forget it and/or never use it afterwards, why is it of any importance to cheat in a way that you can learn? If you're going to cheat on a subject that you feel is pointless to learn in the first place, doesn't it make sense to cheat in a way that prevents you from wasting time with actually learning it?

When you cheat in school the only person your cheating is yourself. And it will catch up to you later when you can't cheat anymore.

You don't spend a lot of time cheating, you just cheat when you're confused. It's also hard to learn the traditional way when your teachers are suck

you dont understand what i was saying
by studying the information you are not learning by rote memorization.

yeah but are they good cheating or bad cheating
and happy hween to u 2

you sound like my geometry teacher
did you actually read my post? because in the post i made it clear that the good way of cheating is not simply copying down answers, but using those answers to learn.

Really? lol. Yes I did read your post. There is no good way of cheating (in my Belief, but that could just be me ;) )
Instead of cheating, just review your work after its been graded. Then with the answers fix your mistakes :D

Low-level college is too. In getting a general A.A. degree, you have to take a variety of classes in a variety of areas, similar to high school. Until/unless you go on to major in a specific subject and get a degree/go into a program that's beyond a general associate's degree, you probably won't use a lot of the information that you learn in college.

Unfortunately, this mindset, to me, is more dangerous than an anti-cheating mindset. Most careers will not require you to do your job without help or without working with other people. Sure, you certainly need a solid foundation of knowledge in each subject, and to know the core basics of whatever career you are pursuing, but never will an employer not allow you to get help from other resources or people. I think most tests should be open-book, personally.
However, I cannot stand kids who just copy other kids' work or cheat off of people on tests. I think that's low and is 'bad cheating' because most of those people will not actually understand it. I'm talking about good, resourceful cheating.

Overall, learning how to use resources and how you learn > memorizing or learning exact concepts etc
