I recently debated this topic in my speech and argument class and I would like to see what the forums thinks of it. The current federal minimum wage in the U.S is at $7.25 an hour. Recently there have been movements in the public and in government to raise this to $15 an hour. Do you agree with this raise or are you against it? Personally I do not agree with it however I will hold back on my reasoning for now because I want to see what everyone else comes up with. Here are some valid points and facts to consider:
    1. Different states have varying economies and thus different pricing in goods and merchandise.
    2. The majority of people working at minimum wage are minors and young adults at entry level jobs.
    3. A person working 40 hours a week and the current federal minimum wage is still way under the poverty line.
    4. An experiment conducted by David Card and Alan Kruegar in 1992 showed that increasing the minimum wage had no negative effects in a states economy and actually increased employment. (Minimum Wages and Employment: A Case Study of the Fast Food Industry in New Jersey and Pennsylvania)
    5. 7,000 McDonalds workers were replaced by kiosks in the UK (McDonald's hires 7,000 touch-screen cashiers)

So since we owe money to other countries we shouldn't carry about personal rights?

I didn't mean it that way. What I meant is, people's rights are important, but we are worrying too much about the rights that the nation is going to lose economic influence in some way. People always need more money. You have pointed out that most of the people who are working at minimum wage are minors, and they are often supported by parents who can make a living. Therefore, I don't think that it's not necessary to worry at such things, and the obstructionists in congress should worry about other things in the economy.

Increasing it to $15 is a bit much, I think, especially for any entry level job or basic jobs that teenagers go to to start learning how to work at a place and how to start adulting.
Once you really start adulting you shouldn't be working at a place that starts you off at minimum anyways

Holy crap 15$!!!! You Americans. Our Canadian minimum wage is about 11$, and thats less than 7.25$. The more you drive up the wage, the more products and services cost. Don't raise it. 15$ an hour is absurd for a minimum wage

The distribution of wealth is severely out of whack, but I don't think a gross increase in minimum wage is the answer.

Raising the minimum wage at such a steep level can really screw over smaller companies, some simply can't afford to pay $15 to their employees. However, there is a need for an increase as when you look at the difference between the minimum wage, the living wage and the poverty wage it's quite distinctly closer (the minimum wage) to the poverty instead of living. No matter what you do sadly society will always revert to the basic economic problem.

If you're fresh out of college and a minimum wage job is your only option you need to really reevaluate your decision in making feminist dance therapy your major.

$10 an hour should be enough, but not all at once. Just a little by little

How did you arrive at 10$/hr? Why not more or less?

Because $15 an hour is basically how much a college graduate will be making fresh out of college and that seems quite a lot for jobs that require significantly less skill and education. Not less because it's not really much more liveable and not more because it would probably destableize the economy if everyone was making enough money from very easy jobs. It defeats the incentive of higher education. Most I think would be fair would be $12, but that's stretching it imo.

$10 an hour is about $1200 take home a month. One is left with so little outside bills they barely participate in the local economy. Additionally with most of those, they are on assistance of some form. We're essentially subsidizing businesses to pay less than livable wage.

Has anyone here lived off $10 or $12 an hour?

But are you supposed to be living off of that wage? The majority of the people who get payed that flip burgers or work cash registers. And if for some reason you dont have a choice whether it be physical or educational should the business be punished by being forced to pay more due to your misfortune?

Supposed to is no longer relevant due to the enormous amount of people living off of it now. It's not just fast food, but many factories start at 9 or 10. Most retail stores also begin at those wages. Whether or not it was intended to be lived off does change the fact that millions now do, which ends up being a heavy cost to society.

This reminds me to clarify that the federal minimum wage is $7.25. However, some states have higher minimum wages, such as California which currently has a minimum wage of $10 per hour
