Ok, so I've been thinking since all of the plugins on meep are custom-made, maybe we could take some of the unique ones (like quests), package them up (with admin commands and stuff) and sell/rent them to other servers.

If we add a no-modify, no-resale type of license then the server purchasing it wouldn't legally be able to change or redistribute it. Then, if servers decide not to honor it, we could have some legal leverage against them. We could even obfuscate the code to make it so that they would have to spend a lot more effort to modify the code and change our plugin.

Or we could distribute a limited version with ads for meep free of charge and require a paid license code to activate the full version

This could be a great way to provide a lot of recurring revenue to meep and allow us to purchase bigger things like advertising.

Also, I was thinking if we keep the (MeepQuests) text before villagers talk and add a publicly-accessible info/about panel that would provide some attribution back to us. This may even provide a small player boost from players who see "MeepQuests" and google it, leading them to our server without directly saying "go join meep" on their server

I'm going to keep updating this as this idea evolves. If it gets too disorganized, @kcschmidt feel free to rearrange it and pm it to me so I can update the actual thread.

erm, how would a no resale no modify license do anything to stop a server? and what would you do if a server that was renting just didn't pay? also, if you put "meepquests" at the front theres no way in hell a server would buy it.

You could threaten legal action just like Microsoft did to meep when it said "comply with our EULA or be shut down by our lawyers".

And as for enforcing the no-modify part. You can always just obfuscate the code so it's next to impossible to read

You seem to not understand, Microsoft said "comply to EULA or be shut down by us, there lawyers have nothing to do with it, if meep could somehow ninja shut down any servers that pissed with it, this would work, but until fuzzlr becomes a poodlecorp hacksorizer we can't do this.

How could Microsoft shut meep down if meep isn't hosting through Microsoft? They would have to go to court and force meeps hosting provider to shut down the server.

Either way, would this be a viable idea if we could enforce the license?

Oh em gosh, microsoft has a 1.10.2 thingy where they can blacklist servers, only old clients of mc would be able to connect to them, if microsoft would have to get lawyers they wouldn't do this, why spend a few thousand bucks on a lawyer to piss of some teenagers? it would be pointless.

I guess it would work if fuzzlr had his pig squad hacker skillz but even then, blaring "meepquest" would drive potential customers away, and wouldn't it take away meeps uniqueness?

    lmao

family friendly minecraft sever sues other minecraft server supposdly stealing there minecraft things. The minecraft server is now threatening to sue the other server. Yup thats right you heard it here, this looks like minecraft 2016 other minecrafters sueing each other

    (purely satire)

I'm not sure about his idea tbh. It has potential but the legal fees would be to much and we can't always know if they do sell it. Also we would need to advertise this adverts cost money. We don't have money.

    1. Oh. Ok.

    2. Maybe limit the distributed version of the plugin in some way so that meeps version stays unique

So I have two ideas to enforce the license without lawyers.

    1. Obfuscate the code so it is nearly impossible to modify

    2. Distribute the plugin for free, but require a paid license code to be able to use the full version without "meep quests" and other limitations.

Basically rewrite the code so it is functionally the same, but is way more confusing to someone reading it.

Still seems like a weak defense, and it would just not be worth the effort.

Not even sure you're allowed to do this through the EULA.

I would love the rent tax,
I could rent out apps and townhomes, and it could work like an embassy but you can assign the rent to a specific length instead of until money runs out. Especially if i could rent out different floors

It doesn't violate the EULA but it is a completely different business than what Meep currently does. I'm sure that devs that work on said plugins would want compensation and the Minecraft scene just isin't that large of a market to make good money from programming work and plugins.

If we sell the plugins then they are no longer unique ... -1
