Let's talk about jokes, folks. More specifically, is joking always okay or are certain jokes not okay to make? If some jokes shouldn't be made, where is the line crossed?

My opinion is that depending on the situation, joking about anything is okay.

Discuss.

 

Joking about anything is perfectly fine. If someone is uncomfortable with the topic, they can remove themselves from the conversation. If no one speaks up, obviously they don't have a large enough problem with it to do something about it (also, one can remove themselves from the situation).

I guess a line could be drawn where feelings start getting really hurt - i.e. someone's parent just passed away, no time to build a psychological defense, and people are making your mom jokes or such.

A line a lot of people draw - slightly... off-topic, but I find it relevant (please correct me if I'm wrong), - is at use of words/jokes like 'retard'.
Personally, I see no issue with this, because languages evolve and retard was just a common phrase meaning stupid when I grew up. My brother and I joked back and forth about how retarded the other one was. To us, it meant stupid. To some, it was the end of the world because we were obviously ablest and totally using that meaning of the word.
I feel the same about jokes. I find dark humor really funny, I giggle at Holocaust jokes. I think it's honestly super-subjective whether something is 'okay' to joke about or not. I have short thumbs, everyone jokes about it. It used to be an insecurity of mine, but now that everyone laughs about it, I do too. I make a point of it, because I know they aren't laughing at me, they're laughing at the fact that my "thumbs ARE SO SMOL AND CUTE". It lightens the day.

Days that don't need to be lightened, or times you should be respectful, i.e. funerals, memorials, obviously jokes aren't okay.

Agreed, which is why I said, "depending on the situation." Another example of this would be making rape jokes around a rape victim, which could be very harmful and/or hurtful towards the victim. In situations like these where someone is offended/legitimately hurt by jokes, the jokes shouldn't be made not because the jokes are inherently bad, but because the person is being hurt.

In situations like these, I think what makes the jokes "not okay" is still the fact that they might hurt someone. If I'm upset about something, jokes can help me feel better; however, I wouldn't make jokes at a funeral because I wouldn't want to offend to other attendees who have different opinions and different ways of coping.

Mainly, but discussing the times/places in which jokes are made is also relevant.

Know who to joke with, simple as that.

 

I don't think joking about anything is okay, because it changes the way you think. If you continually make jokes degrading someone or some thing, such as jokes degrading women, that will become your pattern of thought. You will begin to think about women like that, even if it is only very minor and subtle at first.

 

If it's once or twice to be funny, it's probably ok. But if you only make blonde jokes everyday,mthat is insulting

 

Dark humor is like a pair of legs. Not everyone has it.

Use good judgement when making jokes. There are times and places where you don't make racist jokes, where other times a few might slide. In any case, it may be too early to make jokes about 9/11, the Paris attacks, ect. Just think before you crack jokes. Otherwise, have a good time. That's what jokes are for.

content vs. timing. Joking about anything is okay, content-wise, but making your mom jokes to someone who just had their mom die is not.

 

Whenever jokes start to cross into racial backgrounds or someone feels upset is when it needs to stop.
The only reason I ever got mad at jeff for making an irish potato famine joke is because people died and it was v sad.

Whether or not something is funny is entirely subjective. One person might say that those types of jokes are not funny, while another might find them hilarious. I don't think that those types of jokes should be made around people who are offended by them, but if you make a joke like that around people who find it funny and nobody is offended, no harm comes from that.
