Why are American's obsessed with marijuana?

Why is American so obsessed with legalising marijuana? From where I am sitting, it seems like the rest of the world isn't nearly as passionate about it as Americans.

No idea honestly, maybe the economy.

 

Lower standards of living

 

Because of popular media glamorizing "gangsta" and stuff like that, also, its fun (or so i've heard from the junkies @ my school)

 

As an American, it's because kids have issues, and think that drugs will resolve them.

 

marijauna isn't that bad. (its better for you thank cigarettes i think)

bc if you make it legal and tax it, it raises revenue for education and other important things that the state needs $$ for. also it isn't nearly as dangerous as alcohol, so it makes sense.
it also helps a lot of people with medical conditions by easing the painful and uncomfortable symptoms of the disease/disorder/whatever

It's a hell of a lot better for you than cigs.

Marijuana is not addictive like cigs.
It opens up your throat as you smoke, rather than clogging it (cigs)
Cigs cause numourous problems with your health. Marijuana is beneficial. There are no cases of lung cancer caused by weed.

The smoke of either option is bad but cigs are worse considering they are packed right up full of toxic stuff.

All you gotta do is make sure you get the good stuff. Because some places you get weed it's not good and can be harmful. The more legal you can get it the safer it'll be, it'll be more expensive if it's not legal but be better for you.

Well, he isn't wrong necessarily. At least relative to what is legal in the U.S. I mean, cigarettes are one million times worse but an unsavory amount of people smoke them. Not to mention, marijuana has plentiful uses in manufacturing environments. In fact, the reason marijuna was made illegal was because it was about to take over the logging industry (for paper). But, the giants of logging created a giant array of smear campaigns and got marijuana shut down. Marijuana isn't addictive*, it can help with many things including Glaucoma. Plus, if the government were to utilize the demand for marijuana and tax it, it would create a giant influx of cash into our economy.


*Disclaimer: Marijuana is mentally addictive.

 

I still wouldn't want to share the road with somebody who blazed a joint 15 minutes ago and hopped into their car. Their motor controls and thought processes would be much slower than when they're not high.

Because the popular kids "make" it cool. After illegal marijuana is being shipped in from across the border from drug dealers from Mexico and America many people have gotten a hold of it. If children have parents who smoke it they're more apt to have it. So Americans think "why not have it be legal so we dont have to worry about the cops"
Kids also over glamorize being "gangster" in school which I think is stupid.

 

By that logic, ban alcohol. We all know how well that went.

Actually, the main people i've heard trying to get it changed initially just wanted it for medical use, but because its not that harmful. (I read somewhere (i think an article on the nyt, i can check) that its only marginally more bad for you than drinking alcohol) they decided "what the hell, make it legal for recreational use".

 

Except for the fact that Marijuana negatively effects brain cells, making them into mush. Marijuana could also cause a rapid heartbeat, lack of physical coordination, and disorientation.

 

Now where the hell do you get that from

 

where does banning alcohol come into this? I wouldn't want to share the road with someone totally wasted as well
