So basically, I'm a boy scout and I've seen a lot of things. For instance, at a summer camp, we were playing wiffle ball, and one of the younger scouts (11) got hit in the head by the ball, and we were told to stop. A WIFFLE BALL!!! It's like getting hit by a ping pong ball or something. Sure it stings, but it's never going to cause injury. Scouts have recently been banned from using power tools, except for drills. Back when my dad was a kid, they used to go out, and play games, break noses, and twist ankles. But now, roughhousing is discouraged, rivalry between troops is discouraged, wiffle ball is banned. I mean, you hand a thirteen year old a 12 gauge shotgun, and tell him "The tablesaw is off limits". In fact, firearms will probably also be banned from scouts sometime soon.

Yes, the world is trying to remove anything deemed not safe, all the while ditching liberties and common sense

This seems to be a common theme with a lot of things, such as school. A simple snowball fight seemed to be a normal thing among kids 30 years ago, and it was just a fun thing that kids would do. Sure, once in a while someone would get bruised, maybe have a bloody nose, or even break a limb of some kind. But it never seemed to be much of a deal, and they would be fine for the most part. But you would get hurt, and you would shake it off, or learn something from the experience. When I was in elementary school, if you held a stick of some kind or even attempted to make a snowball you would immediately be sent to the principles office. Its not to say that I think that the safety precautions are stupid because they clearly serve a good purpose. There definetly should be rules to make everyone safe and I'm totally fine with that. However it's taken too far and fun in things is just ruined. Sometimes, it just becomes too extreme and it's quite obvious that if anything happens teacher don't want anything on there hands. Schools don't want to get in trouble because of accidents so they make sure that none of it could happen. I assure you that the teachers aren't doing it out of a pure concern for kids safety. It's taken to the extent where there is bearly any fun in things. Nor is it gonna change soon.

I know this is off topic but do not even get me started on the spilled coffee at mcdonalds. She suffered third degree burns and had permanent skin damage.

    Yipee! I'm a scout too!
When I go camping with my crew, we do some weird things. We actually went camping last week, and the boys all decided to have a wrestling match. The camp before, we all poured water on ourselves in 30 degree (Fahrenheit) weather. Then there's that one kid who throws the Reddi Whip can in the fire and doesn't think it will explode. Good times.
What we do is unofficially use weapons as a group. Not allowed to point guns at other kids? Invite the Boy Scout troop paintballing! It's not illegal if it's unofficial. That's what my brother did for his birthday party.
We've found a lot of different ways to get around these things. You've just gotta be creative.
As far as roughhousing and common sense goes, I think it's one in the same box. You learn best by experience. Believe it or not, from a girls view, Boy Scouts are still capable of doing tons of reckless things. I find it hilarious when we play our annual huntsman games in the dark and trip on the rocks. I enjoy the freedom I have. I wish I had more, but you take what you can get, right?

Also, I'm no Girl Scout. Don't you dare ever call me a Girl Scout. Never. I'm closer to a Boy Scout in my Venture Crew than a Girl Scout. I never liked Girl Scouts, don't intertwine me with their kind.

You also have to understand that the coffee was so hot I'm pretty sure it was illegal to serve. It's one thing to have burnt yourself because of your stupidity, but another thing entirely to be scarred for life.

Kids need to go out, have fun, get a little hurt. Kids are tougher than you think, you should let kids be kids. Don't hover so damn much.

I had an interesting essay for my AP Lang class a few months ago pertaining to this discussing the effect of safety on freedom. For if there is too much safety, can we really be free? And if we are truly free, are we safe?

The whiffle ball thing is definitely taking things too far.

Coffee spills happen. They should never cause third degree genital burns. Anyone who quotes that case as an example of excessive litigation should set their genitals set on fire, and see if that changes their perspective.

It all depends on context. How real is the specific danger, and what are the potential consequences?

    LOL.

Original award was closer to $2.8M. It was lowered on appeal to $640k, then before a second appeal was resolved, they settled for an undisclosed sum less than $600k. Barely enough to cover the costs of her extensive surgeries, most likely.

    word.

Also, I think that while the world is becoming to safety conscious, most of it is out of love by parents.

This thread is unsafe. Someone could potentially be triggered to the point where they injure themselves. I think this thread should be deleted, or at least moderated to the point where we can be sure nobody gets hurt.

But yes, we are too concerned with safety. One of my beliefs is that if a kid thinks he/she will be unsafe doing something, then the kid shouldn't do it. Sure we should have some safety measures, but it's just getting ridiculous at this point.

By the way, I could get hit with a thousand wiffle balls directly at my forehead and that wouldn't even be enough to cause a head ache.
