If there's any year in which we could see a 3rd party rise and challenge the 2-party system? This will be it.

Hillary and Donald have the highest 'Unfavourables' of any major general election candidates in over 30 years. (The number of people who have a favourable view, minus the number of people that have an unfavourable view)

    Hillary Clinton -- MINUS 14% (Unfavourable 54.5% V 40.6% Favourable)

    Donald Trump -- MINUS 32% (Unfavourable 63.0% V 31.1% Favourable)

All it would take is 15% in the GE polls, for the Libertarian to be on the same stage as the Democratic and Republican nominees. It's possible, though admittedly unlikely at this point.

Am I suggesting that a Libertarian candidate will win the GE? Or likely win? No. They're a long-shot at best. But this could be the year we see them break the mold and challenge the Democratic/Republican way of politics, that has become the norm in the U.S. For democracy's sake, I sure hope so.

With that, please watch the above debate. It's unlike any that you have seen this far from the Democratic or Republican side. They whizz through loads off issues in about 30minutes. None of this 3hr garbage.

Let's make political discourse great again!

Unfortunately a third party candidate will never win in America. Republicans and Democrats both have a lust for power and the system is rigged in their favor.

People would have said the same about a Trump nomination. You never know what might happen. Even 5% in the popular vote this year would be incredible.

He ran on the Republican ticket and I would assure you if he ran 3rd party from the beginning he wouldn't be where he currently stands.

My point was a matter of principle. Incredibly unlikely things can happen.

Do you remember when Trump announced his candidacy? He was a laughing stock. Everyone found it utterly hilarious, that it was nothing more than a publicity stunt. Every week we had to endure experts and analysts telling us that *THIS* would be the day where Trump would fall. And it never happened.

Longshots come in. An amazing result for the Libertarians would be 5% nationwide in the general, which is absolutely possible. If it happens to be Trump and Clinton.

That's because the media has been giving Trump non-stop covering. They actually found that he's gotten so much media coverage (for free), that it's the equivalent of almost 2 billion dollars in ads. If the media did that with a third part candidate then hell yea they would get more votes.

I don't think so. About 2 months after he launched his campaign? He was in 1st place in the polls, 5 points above 2nd, in a field of 15+ runners. Trump's initial success was primarily down to his anti-PC, anti-establishment rhetoric. No doubt assisted heavily by the media.

The Libertarians don't need £2 billion. They just need a month or two of good coverage like Trump had. As said, I'm not even talking about a victory for them here. 5%-10% Nationwide would be exceptional. In a year where the Dems and GOP have the highest unfavourability ratings (possibly) ever!

    --- Updated Favourability Ratings ---

    Hillary Clinton -- MINUS 16.3% (Unfavourable 55.4% V 39.1% Favourable)

    Donald Trump
    -- MINUS 35.3% (Unfavourable 64.7% V 29.4% Favourable)

    Other notables:

    Ted Cruz -- MINUS 22.3%

    John Kasich -- PLUS 3.9%

    Bernie Sanders -- PLUS 6.1%

    Barack Obama -- PLUS 0.8%

I'm a while late but Ross Perot did well as a 3rd party candidate. Unfortunately he was mega rich, got no electoral college votes despite getting like 20% of the popular vote, and both of the two parties attacked him over one another so.

You forgot to add they promptly changed the rules to require a higher vote % to appear on debates as well.

Personally, I'd love to see a third or even fourth party. Normally I'm skeptical of diversity, but more choices is usually better. I personally side with the Tea Party movement, and would love to see the government get the f*** out of my life... It's a shame, because this year would have been absolutely perfect for a libertarian to make it into the spotlight, but it doesn't seem like one's going to.

You do know that A third party candidate will help Trump more than Clinton or the 3rd party candidate, right?

Libertarians take the position that government interference is bad, and there should be as little of it as possible. Any laws infringe on personal freedoms, and therefore there should be as few as possible.

I believe the Libertarian ticket will be running on a fiscally ultra-conservative, socially liberal platform. Harking back to "true conservativism" whereby the government would stay out of as many issues as possible.

Wasn't exactly my 'cup of tea', but here's the Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson talking about his beliefs+life on the JRE podcast.

I read up on the liberterians (wiki, and the political buffs at my nerd store that i game at) and it says that if 2 adults agree to something, then it should be legal, so are for things like prostitution, drugs, and people agreeing to work without pay.
