As an American, would you bow?

Discussion in 'Debates' started by Ranger0203, Apr 25, 2016.

?

Would you, or should you, bow?

  1. Yes- Absolutely I would bow. I would respect that country's culture, and bow before royalty

  2. Maybe- Depends on the situation. If everyone else is bowing, or I feel I should, then yes

  3. No.

So let's say, hypothetically, you are an American traveling in a foreign country, and you encounter members of said country's royal family. Would you or should you, bow?

Well if their culture promotes it, or if it is normal to bow in that country, I don't see why not. You are in their country after all, and should respect their culture.

So yes, I would bow, if it is normal practice to do so.

I was talking more like a European or African country, where bowing isn't a common greeting, rather than a country like Korea, where it is more like a handshake.

To clarify, I was referring specifically to the 'commoner'->'Royalty' bow, instead of person->person.

Is there a specific reason as to why we should not bow down?
Only person I won't bow to is Kim Jong-un.

Oh I see. In that situation I would look at others and see if they are also doing the same.
If there's no one around, I probably would not bow, just to keep things simple. If I was wrong, I'd learn for next time.

Really depends on the country, if I was in a country whose government i vehemently disagree with I would just think it would be counter productive.

I'd bow to Kim Jong-Un because I don't want to die or work in a concentration camp. Assuming I ever go to North Korea.

Well, it depends if it's a sign of respect (in which case: YES IF: you do respect them AND what they stand for/their laws NO IF: you don't respect them or what they stand for.) or if it's a type of salute to a country (in which case: YES IF: they've helped your country and you support your own country NO IF- they've wronged you or your country.) if you aren't going to be bowing or obeying THEIR laws in THEIR country, you shouldn't be there anyhow.

If it's everyone bowing to one person who's standing, I would just find somewhere else to go.

If I go to Japan or something where they shake hands and or just bow to each other as a sign of greeting and respect for one another I would bow.

What you on about? Kim Jong Fat is bae. He is nice and kind to his people. They are properly fed and he spends a his money on food and services. He would neber invest in war-fare as he believes it is wrong. Even look at the name: Democratic peoples republic of North Korea. What's wrong with that?
Have you heard, he talks to Dolphins and he doesn't go the toilet!
Props if you got the reference...

My adoption agency always hosts gatherings for all of us adopted children from Asia so I always bow towards my elders during these gatherings and during my Taekwondo lessons and tournaments. If I were to go to any other foreign country where bowing is the norm, I would bow towards any superior or member of the royal family for showing hospitality towards myself. If it were North Korea, I would discreetly spit in my hand and shake Kim Jong Un's hand with it (I'd preferably use the left one).

Woohoo Korea! (Sorry quite patriotic still)

If it's a custom in that country, follow the custom, it's the only respectful thing to do. You're in their country, not the other way around.

When you visit a foreign country, it's considered rude not to adopt their customs of politeness. You would feel the same if people came over to your house and started slurping at their drinks and belching after dinner (these are polite signs of enjoyment in other countries).

Within my own country, I would be (and have been) like that one guy in the Wehrmacht photo who refused to salute Hitler. Public prayers? Ever heard of the First Amendment? No, I will NOT bow my head, and I'll thank you not to force your superstitions on me in the future.

Ok, I'm seeing this repeated a lot...

I'm not talking about countries where it is considered polite for everyone to bow to everyone. I'm speaking specifically of countries that have royalty, and where people only bow to royalty.

Depends on the type of "royalty" if it was king or queen/emperor yes. But if they were say kids or related to them I wouldn't bow. As bowing is a sign of weakness and creates a lack of respect for you. I would bow to respect their culture not them.
