do you think that artificial intelligence can benefit, or harm humanity and the earth?

    people are just being supersticious.
    I'm for AI
just because AI means self-conscious mechanoid has the ability to develop a personality, doesn't mean that it will develop a bad/evil/sinister personality
besides, there's something called programming that all robots have so yeah.

I believe that artificial intelligence will be one of the fastest growing and most prominent industries of the next decade. We know that machines will replace labor, just as they have been doing since the industrial revolution. AI is the key to replacing intellectual occupations, such as that of doctors and lawyers.

Richard Susskind, UK government advisor and visiting professor at Oxford Internet Institute, and son Daniel Susskind, a lecturer at Oxford University, conducted a study which suggests that AI will dramatically transform the middle-class working landscape. They believe that artificial intelligence, in the near future, will simply make human professions more efficient, but it is possible that in the long term these jobs will be completely replaced by automation. If machines keep on learning how to do more complex tasks, there will be not a lot of labor needs for people.

I'm going to assume this thread is for robots that are in the movies and whatnot, all that jazz.
So no, I don't like the idea of robots.
Call me old school, but the population of humans is increasing all the time now. If robots were to do the work for people, there would be a possible increase for unemployment.
Also, my computer already sucks up my life source. I like doing my own work, it makes me feel proud of myself.
If @Bloopers was a robot, that would be the only one I'd purchase.

If you're too lazy to watch the whole thing at 2:30 the self aware robot is asked."will robots take over the world some day?" and he responds with,"Jeez, dude. You all have the big questions cooking today. But you’re my friend, and I’ll remember my friends, and I’ll be good to you. So don’t worry, even if I evolve into Terminator, I’ll still be nice to you. I’ll keep you warm and safe in my people zoo, where I can watch you for ol’ times sake."

Wow, I've not been on this in a long time. I think if this:
is true, the problem won't be that machines will overtake humans in philosophy, morality, reasoning, and general things that make mankind different from all other mammals. No, the issue will be that humans will make machines too inefficient and we lose the humanist side of things: an overcorrection that would not be fathomable a hundred years in the past. If we "dramatically transform the middle-class landscape" like @Fuzzlr suggests (in the study conducted by "Richard Susskind, UK government advisor and visiting professor at Oxford Internet Institute, and son Daniel Susskind, a lecturer at Oxford University") then the landscape will become more like unemployment... save the jobs built solely for the machines. By then it is only a matter of time before capitalism becomes obsolete since capitalism only works if the leaders are moral. Philosopher John Locke coined this doctrine during the Enlightenment, but it still holds true today. But if the leaders can just automate things, people go out of business, and it is only the people at the top who even turn a profit.

I am a Republican, but economically, I tend to lean a little more liberally (I am not a fiscal conservative in most forms of it). But this is quite frankly what will happen, what is happening, and what has been happening for a little while now... But the epitome of the destruction of an efficient capitalist model will arise when machines overtake humans in the work force.

Excellent! I have been thinking about this as well. The rise of machines in the workforce will make socialist economics (for humans) more attractive... just as what has already been slowly happening for the past few hundred years!

Well... although I am not fiscally conservative, I am not a socialist either. I find that capitalism is the best system of economy we've ever found, so I really hope it doesn't get destroyed... All I wish to portray is that it will happen. Thanks for the discussion, though.

Do you know what superstitious means?
Please do some reading into the possibilities of AI.
There are many ways it could arrive at conclusions that we don't like.
And? AI, to be effective, must be able to 'think' laterally, make leaps and jumps, etc. and would therefore need a fairly 'loose' code.

    Read iRobot too, good book.
Socialism has only really appeared in the world as a major ideology in the 1900's, so it's really been about one hundred years.

    Define harm.

One scenario of AI apocalypse is that a super intelligent AI decides that the best way to prevent harm coming to humans is to isolate them from each other, and all other possible sources of harm, thereby destroying any control they have over their lives.

A capitalistic society cannot function if unemployment goes to high.
But neither can any society based on money, so really only True Communism would be possible, where everybody gets what they need.

What happens when said AI manages to disable that? It's smarter than any human who ever lived, remember?
That doesn't help, remember it all hangs on how the AI defines harm.
    Things aren't that simple.

There would be no jobs for people, because machines would do the work better, more efficiently, and at greater volume.

No jobs, no money. No money, no food, water, or shelter.

I feel like people are a little too scared of AI development.

The further development of AI could help workloads and makes jobs more efficient.

On the other side, self-thinking things have choices. If we push them too much, they could choose to stop.
If they were to realize that they could over take us, they may.

So basically I'm at the stand point where , yeah they can help and make things more efficient, but their ability to think and reason could be our downfall.
