Seriously, you could rename an event item by just deleting the whole item name in the anvil window, then you could put some new enchants on it, but now you can't anymore. You just can't simply rename event items, it won't let you do so.
/smelt now can't smelt wood logs into charcoals and nether gold ore into gold ingot.
