However it is going to be distributed in the economy, what are the specifics of the item itself? Would it just be TNT combined with a silk touch book? Or an entirely new uncraftable item?

Make it craftable. Problem solved. Combine a stack of TNT with a silk book and voila.

Make them more unreliable with a 15% chance of failure 20% chance of not silk touching the blocks etc. For balance. Everybody goes home happy, no posts on here whining about it. Everybody wins.

how do you guys feel about 2 versions? an unreliable, craftable one and a reliable, purchase-only one?

We feel that this is unnecessary and would cause extreme lag also if ya want to blow something up blow it up there is no reason to keep items from blowing it up with TNT.
