The Mojang EULA, in short, prevents any Minecraft servers from soliciting anything built into the game. So essentially servers can only sell cosmetic effects, which the majority of players do not care about.
Crappy perks -> Less donators -> Less Revenue for servers -> Lower quality of game play and servers having to close due to lack of funds.
For the most part only very large servers can easily make the switch to enforced EULA, for the rest of servers it is very hard. Meepcraft has had its ups and downs but has definitely been falling down a slipper slope. To be honest I forget when I joined, the game says March 5th, 2014, but I think I played before that. Personally I think this is a result of the EULA but mainly what seems like the lack of interest from Miguel Guerrero's end. (Fuzzlr) Seems like he is moving on in life and than can be expected from someone at his stage in life.
EDIT: Larger servers can easily adapt to the EULA because of the large funds they receive and the plethora of developers they have. For smaller servers with less resources this merit is much more difficult. I think with such a EULA in place smaller servers and ones like Meep that we all love and enjoy will start to disappear as a result.
