His overarching point is this:
It's not about specific kits, or perks. It's about the obligation to the customer. That is why this isn't a donation, a donation removes any obligation to satisfy the demand of the person.
However, in this case, that person is a customer, because they brought a product. Most understand why this product is no longer available, but the reasoning still stands, they spent money, if not hundreds of dollars for a product. A product must replace the product lost, or it's simply bad business and going forward there will be doubts on whether or not to buy more products from this business.
That is why it is a sale, and not a donation.
