What's the point of creating a team if it's a solo tournament, or am I misunderstanding

You represent your team, so if someone on your team wins, the team splits the prize. Thus, it probably benefits you to go solo if you're confident you'll win. If you're not 100% confident you'll win, you want to assemble a team of good pvpers who all have a chance to win and split the prize.
At least, that's how I understand it.
