Not sure if this is common knowledge but I just recently learned about it and have found it incredibly useful so I though that I would share.
Pressing F3+H toggles on advanced item tooltips. On mouseover the tooltips will show the item ID and the exact durability. Handy for creating sign shops and finding that last diamond vein before you have to go repair.
