Actually, it can cause some problems. Let's say you have to go afk for like, an hour, but you constantly have people msging you on a regular basis. They have no idea you are afk, so they just keep sending messages. Then you come back from whatever you have been doing: total spam clears your chat, and you don't see something important right away. Obviously you can still check your chat logs, but seriously, who does that often?
