Also, who said Arcanine with legendary stats and a Persian with high agility (high crit percentage) was op? Also Lance's Dragonite cheats because his dragonite knows the move Barrier. Finding pokemon with the teleport + fly glitch to obtain some secret pokemon (and mew) was also a blast.
They may be old and glitchy, but they're still really fun to play (And more challenging than the newer ones)

Also try the Exploreres series! They're a blast! Exploreres of Sky is freaking amazing, It being my favorite pokemon game. Emerald is 2nd best pokemon game I've played, 3rd being Platinum.

Since you can literally hop into any generation, you should start with Platinum with your 2DS.

Whitney, the normal type gym leader, has a milktank that halted my progress for a long time (When I was a kid.) Let's just say she is still one of the hardest gym battles of all time.

Favorite pokemon game of all time is
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of sky
It's ironically not a main series game but I have an emotional connection to that game
Sounds dumb as hell but It was so amazing I cry because the final boss just has amazing music to go along with it and the fact saving the world was in your hands was just too much to handle
But don't start there, start with something basic
