On www.debate.org they have a debating period for all debates, and then a voting period for the debates, so that all debates can be summarized.
I feel that this would be really effective on MeepCraft, as I feel quite frustrated that all the debates just keep going to no end, what do they achieve? It would also allow people who don't want to post a whole paragraph to explain their opinion can just vote during the voting period.
I would recommend a debating period of a week, and then a voting period for 2-5 days.
