Unfortunately, you're going to have to talk about it if you want to be staff, whether it's here or in an interview. I was surprised and disappointed to see that you didn't include it in your application...
You were banned for duping. Yes, it was duping, and as a former staff member you should have known that, regardless of the misunderstanding that later occurred. That fact is not going to go away just because you want it to. :( There are other staff members (as well as people who are accepted for interview) who have made mistakes in their past and have less-than-clean ban histories. But they have confronted those mistakes and those histories head-on, showing that they understand what they did wrong (even if there were circumstances that made it not entirely their fault, they understood that they WERE at least partially at fault), and showing that they have learned from it and taken the opportunity to grow.
Without seeing you do that... I'm afraid I could not trust you as a staff member and could not support this application. I do think you have some great qualities that would serve you well as a Helper, like friendliness, helpfulness, and dedication to the server. :) So I really hope you change your mind and decide to address this issue, however uncomfortable and long of a story it might be.
