I agree that may be how someone negative would look at it, I am not negative so I see it for why I did it! I was at the mall with my three children buying school clothes for the upcoming school year and all I saw were signs "Back-To-School" Sales, so I decided for the fun of it to use that as the sales tag line! Secondly the discounts help the community members who may need a small discount to get the ranks they have been waiting for! FYI: Not everything in life is a Master Plan! (It is when you are in business) It was a fun way to give community members a discount!

I was neither judging the title of the sale nor being negative, I was judging the timing of the sale itself and it's relation to the EULA. I've seen other servers pull sales around this time to bring in more money in case Mojang decides their server is breaking the rules.
Secondly, discounts will help the buyer, but more importantly the server. This is what stores like Macy's do all the time, with their seemingly unlimited sales events. With the original price cut, this will make skeptical users who were on the fence about buying a rank tip over and buy the rank. Sales are not for people who can't afford a rank, it's for those who are skeptical. If someone can't afford a rank I don't think they would get it even for 10% off, they have more important things than Minecraft in this case.
Also, the original purpose of the sale was to "fund creation of new projects", which the sale intends to do by making more people buy ranks. (I don't think I have to explain how selling more for less brings in profit to you)
FYI: During good months (in terms of donations) some of the money does go to Fuzzlr as profit. He said this himself to everyone in the staff chat, when I was still a staff member.
