Can someone also please explain why people have anime lists. It's not like people have lists for other shows. (I don't watch anime).

To keep track of what you have watched, plan to watch, the episode you're on, etc. The website I use allows me to give a rating, group the shows based on watching status, (watching, dumped, completed, on hold, plan to watch, etc), and keep track of episode numbers. The anime are also ranked based on popularity and ratings. It's extremely helpful in organizing everything.
It's also very useful in remembering what you plan to watch and to remember the name of an anime that you are recommending. I have over 30 shows I plan to watch (recommended or ones I thought looked cool), but I would easily forget most of them without a list.
